Camping Jeep

What are your opinions on the best Jeep for camping/hiking and that sort of thing?

The best Jeep for camping/hiking on how much gear you intend to bring along, and how many people you plan on fitting in it. Are you talking about "car" camping or backpacking? How spartan do you camp? A newer or older Jeep?

If you want cargo room for gear the standard Wranglers are not the way to go unless you plan on either putting cargo racks on, or towing a trailer, or getting some more friends to come along thus justifying a second vehicle so they can haul the extra gear .I had a Comanche years ago, it was a blast for car camping. I could carry tents, gear, food, three people and enough firewood for two nights.

Wranglers would work fine for two, I can carry all the gear I need, in my wrangler and have, but you do have to watch what you take. If you plan on camping with more people or take a lot of gear, than a 04 or earlier grand cherokee may be what you should look for, or an unlimited wrangler.

That would be the way to go.

I love my Xj. For me it's perfect. Boy Scout, Eagle Scout, Assistant Scout Master, Venturer, working at various camps... I've seen my fair share of camping.

With a Cherokee you can have 4 (5 small) people with some gear and go anywhere.
With the back seat down you can have you and someone else and a ton of gear while going anywhere.

Also, I've slept in the back of my Cherokee multiple times. The nights just kept getting colder and the rain kept coming while camping so we all moved into vehicles. It was just me and my gear in the back. I'm 6'1" and if I lay at an angle in back I'm comfortable. I wouldn't try that with two guys in back. But it would work with the special lady friend. Gotta keep close.

Dont forget the LJ. I Wonder if you can sleep in the back.... hm.. I like my tj for camping, I hated it at first. Then I got a roof rack life was perfect lol. I have even slept inside my tj with a hammock.

I would say xj is a very good choice though. Cheap to mod and buy, plenty of room. Double your room if you put a rack on it.

Or you can go all out and look for a wagoneer. I suppose the grand cherokee is not a bad choice. If I were you, I would probably go cherokee, or maybe even unlimited

Haha, I was wonder about the LJ. I wonder if anyone has slept in the back. (Picture Request of how?) Wagoneer would be incredible. My bud has a 99WJ and uses it for camping as well and loves it

I'd say a cherokee or grand cherokee would be the way to go. I have been camping a bunch of times with my YJ's, and you can do it but its a tight squeeze to get everything you need into it. And this was only with 2 people, if you are going to have more people, you need something bigger. I took my old Cherokee camping once or twice, its much more convenient cause you can just leave everything inside of it. Plus if it starts raining you just open the hatch and sit there. Plus tons more room, so can bring more stuff. I slept in it several times too, would never try that with a YJ or TJ.

Oh man, I forgot about the hatch. The hatch makes a quick tarp when it rains. Or even shade if it's hot as Haiti.
