To start off, i'm new to the forums, and i turn 16 in december. I just sold my quad to buy a car and now i have about $3500 to play with. I'm leaning twards a grand cherokee because i want something that i can drive to the mountains or dunes, and have plenty room for people or other things. I don't want a v8 because i can't cover that much in gas/insurance. My brother had two early/late 80's jeep cherokees (i'm not sure if thats exactly what they were) but he had problems with one. And my father figure guy had an 02 or 01 And he had to sell it because something happened where it was more expensive to fix than it's worth. I would like to look at this 97 up in portland for $3000, but i've been hearing the 90's jgc's are problematic and expensive to fix. Any insight or tips. I want a reliable and inexpensive rig.
That seems a little expensive to me....older jgcs in Chicagoland are half that price for a Laredo with over 100,000 miles... I would keep looking.

If you're stuck on getting one with a 4.0 I would get an xj cherokee. Lots of info on them here. I would opt for a 97-01 preferably a 97-99.
On a side note having a suv and being in high school you'll be stuck driving most of the time cause everyone can pile in it. Although you can put the back seats down and sleep in it as well. I had an 87 4runner in high school and can speak from experience.
