Buying a jeep

Hey i was looking at a 1987 jeep YJ 5 spd and i was wondering if 141k miles was to many for the price tag of 5000$

Also if anybody has any recommendations about buying a jeep they would be much appreciated

is it stock or any mods. I bought mine for 2000 with 90000 miles on it and 40000 on the motor so i think that is way to high for that. Imo i wouldnt pay 2000

RE: Jeep buying

Actually i found out some more about the jeep. It has a 4 inch skyjacker lift with brand new Mickey Thompson MTZ's with new premium wheel. It is a 6 Cylinder whit a soft top. there was little to no rust on it. What do you think

Just as a comparison: 95' YJ, 5spd, 6cyl, 2 sets of doors, hardtop and softtop, 154k, new paint, clean carfax, absolutely no rust. I paid $3850. If it were me I wouldn't pay that for an 87. Offer way less...you never know, he may need out of it. On the contrary...I don't think 141k is too many miles. If it doesn't smoke you may be ok for a while.

Prices can differ by several thousand from location and the shape that the jeep is in. post some pictures and we can tell the condition, but it all depends on what other jeeps are going for in your location. a 5000 jeep in one state might be a hell of a deal and get bought in a couple days, whereas the same jeep for the same price in another state might stay for sale for months. Some people find awesome deals, like these guys that posted above me did, and some might overpay. Look on craigslist or autotrader in your area and compare those prices and you will know if it is a good deal or not.

there all about 5 grand for a decent older wrangler. Would you recommend a wrangler, CJ-5, CJ-7 or a Cherokee.

all have their plus' and minus', and are all totally different animals.
i would suggest driving each one then make your mind up.
the cj's did have a weaker frame, being a c channel and not totally enclosed. the yj's have the enclosed frame, but the rear seat is all but useless.
the xj's dont even have a frame, but have lots of all weather room in there.
what do you want to do with it? which do you like the looks of most? do you want to build it up? do you have kids? do you need more room than a yj has to offer? do you want nice ac in the summertime and a real roof over your head? wanna go topless?
see what i mean? different animals my friend.....
try to narrow it down a little?
asking us to pick a cj, yj or xj for you is never gonna end right IMO.

Well i don't really need the backseat. im just getting ready to go off the college next fall about 3 hours from home. so i need something that will get back and forth will reasonable gas mileage. I would like to put a 3 or 4 inch lift with 33's. In the summer time i would like to go topless. I also like to do a little off roadin' but nothing to extreme. Any recommendation are welcomed.

if you wanna go topless, i would stick to a yj then.
i sold my very built yj after i got the xj, and can honestly say the cherokee is 110% nicer to drive on the road, both are on 37's.
just my .02
for comparison...
the yj. (i did have a full soft top also)

for a 4.0, 200k is reasonable. many go over that without major work, but unless you know the history, i wouldnt go over 125k myself.
for the old 4.2's, i dont know, never had one.

you like apples or oranges?
see my point?
i wont buy from dealers if i can help it. why pay more?
if you want a warranty etc, then go to the dealer.
if you want the best price, go private seller.

if the dealer has exactly what you need, then go get it. otherwise, go private. just my .02
upto you bud.
