to buy, or not to buy.

found a 2002 tj. it's got the 4.0 engine, manual transmission, which is what i really am looking for. It's got about 70k miles on it. female owned, no off-roading. Only asking 9900. by far the best deal i've found.

however, i have a couple worries. when i test drove it, it was a little rough starting. took a couple tries to get it going. also, the check engine light is on. i drove it over to my mechanic, who referred me to his best friend who specializes in engines. he said the engine is making a kinda weird noise, nothing too bad but worth getting checked out.

would you buy? i mean if my guy just says it needs to fluids and a tune up, or a little more? what would be your cut off line? this is obviously a pretty good deal, but i don't wanna regret this.

All the "specialist" could say was "kinda making a weird noise" Not much of a specialist if you ask me

I'm drooling to buy a yellow TJ like you describe with a manual and 4.0L, but I gotta wait till the diesel truck is paid for

I've been driving our 99 Cherokee with a 4.0L since new (now 186,000 miles) with no engine issues except rough idle that was fixed by cleaning the throttle body with carb cleaner spray.

06 Solar Yellow TJ X obtained 10-2009 with 3400 miles
99 Cherokee Sport, bought new, now @ 223,000 miles

All vehicle since 1996 are equipt with OBDII ports. Most auto parts stores have scanners that you can borrow/rent to check the codes with. That would be a good place to start with finding out why the CEL is on. The slow start could possibly be a weak battery. Pull hose off the top of the throttle body and take a look down the throat to see how clean it is. If it is dirty, clean it with some O2 sensor safe TB cleaner. The list goes on and on, but as a general whole, the 4.0 is a good engine, and if properly maintained, will last for a long time.

BTW, can you describe the "weird noise" at all? That could help with the diagnosis.

No scanner needed to pull codes on your jeep. Put the key in the ignition and cycle to on and off 3 times. on the third time it will flash the error codes.
