Buy cheaper and upgrade or straight to Sahara?

I am a soldier stationed in Iraq. They are giving some good deals on 09 wranglers. Should I get the XB 4x4 2dr ($17000) and upgrade with bigger tires and wheels, or $24,500 for 2 dr Sahara? I know this is a specific question, just wondering if the base model can larger tires, etc.

Thanks in advance

Mike

There is nothing wrong with starting with the base model. It boils down to are the few aptions that the sahara comes with worth the extra $7500 to you. To my knowledge that Sahara doesnt come with anything extra that will make it more capable off road. Of course I'm bias because I'm not crazy about the painted fenders. I would use that money to get wheels, tires, lift, bumpers, winch, and you may still have some left over.

I would go with the X over the Sahara (I would go with the S package over the B package personally but mine is a daily driver) and build from there. However looking at it this way, the Sahara is a 3 grand jump over the X with the S package. The Rubicon is only a 3 grand jump over the Sahara and is a much better platform for off road work. Of course on the down side of that the Rubicon is a 6 grand jump over the X S Package and an 8 grand jump over the X B package. It all depends on how you look at it and whether you are a glass half full or glass half empty kind of guy.

If it is something you are not going to use off road a lot and just want a nice DD with some capabilities then go for the Sahara if the extra options are what you are after. If you want something to use as a Jeep was truly intended then go for the X and build it up or go for the Rubicon is you can swing the $
