Auto or Manual Transmission
I was a long time owner of a Landcruiser fj40. I am looking to buy a rubicon 2 door. As I've never drove a serious 4wd with an automatic transmission, I'd like to know how they compare to a manual trans off road? I like the idea of not having to shift all the time, but I also don't want to sacrifice to much performance. Since I'm not a kid any more the auto trans is looking attractive. Is there a preference between the 4.0L and the 3.7L engine? I'm considering a low mileage 05 Wrangler Rubicon with an auto transmission a 4.0L engine and a hard top. Thanks for any help in advance.

hands down go with the 4.0L you wont regret it.
as for the auto or manual its mostly preference, if you dont mind shifting then a manual may get you better MPG but if that doesnt concern you i would go with an auto. This way as you said you dont have to worry about shifting and keep in mind a torque converter is stronger then a clutch -Kyle

If you do alot of slow speed crawling over stuff then get the auto. I like the manual. I just like the control, but climbing stuff, you cant beat an auto. The 4.0 is a proven motor that wont let you down. It has a low torque curve that makes it nice for wheeling. The 3.7 isnt a bad motor. Its been used in the mini vans for years. The only down fall is the power band is higher up on the rpms. The JK is a nice Jeep. you can put a 2" lift on it and fit 35"s. The TJ is a great platform too. Drive both and decide for yourself.
