Am I over my head

Looking at a CJ7 to build out for me and then ( hopefully ) will become my only son's first ride ( he is 13 now ). Have found a marginal candidate... CJ7 with aftermarket fiberglass hardtop ( most likely the first thing to be sold off )
equipped with 304V8, 4 spd ( Hurst shifter installed ), Power Steering and Brakes. Looks to have originally been a Golden Eagle ( never seen those wheels on anything else ). It's less than a mile from my house and the guys willing to sell if for $1,000.00. Looks like it might need a new tub ( have leads on a couple of YJ and CJ tubs for less than $500.00). It has been sitting for SEVERAL years. Am I biting off more than I can for a first time
true Jeep build out. Just lost out on a driveable CJ5 for $1,800.00 on the same day I talked to this owner. Still working on owner of JY in pristine condition other than sat in a garage for like the past 7 years ( hardtop, no body damage, auto but possibly needs new engine) but the owner is just not
sure he wants to sell ( have offered $1,500 for it ). Also have lead on 80 J-4000 pickup for less than $1,500.00 that I'm considering just to turn a quick profit and jump back on the CJ/YJ isssue.

Sorry for the long post but felt like this was the place to start.
Here is the CJ7

Well, in my experience there will be another. Make a list of minimal things (like it runs) and look for that. If you are even questioning wether or not its a good decision, its prob not.

just my $.02

It looked OK... I know the Jeep has been repainted... the guy said so... I'm almost thinking from what I saw that he painted EVERYTHING... the frame had what looked more like paint peeling off of it... I found out today that I have a small metal fab show right across the street from me that is more than willing to help with patching up a tub and the guy referred me to a place less than 5 miles from my house that could blast the tub ( if I were to get one of the ones I've found ).

OK.. first thanks to those that responded. I appreciate your input/advice. After looking at a few other options ( found 2 other J-10s for pretty cheap ) I moved on in another direction I had been considering ( please don't hate me for this ) I had also been considering early 4Runners (love those removable tops.. have had two K5 Blazers in my past ) I was just searching around craigs and found an 86 5 mins ( and miles from my house ) and worked a deal for it after getting it started ( via my own jumper cables and smarts ( it's at a Chevy dealer ) and drove it around while the salesman pitched my offer. So I pick it up Monday. I drove it around the lot unbelievable that nobody at the dealership grabbed this thing that's been sitting for 8 months at their dealership. Some ex-salesperson/buyer must have taken it on trade and then left it without caring.
My plan is to clean it up and see if I can get enough to purchase myself a Jeep which doesn't require the effort of the CJ7. Maybe I'll just attempt to trade it straight up with the guy for the YJ. He gets a running truck I get the Jeep I want. Wish me luck and THANKS AGAIN.
