Advice on potential first jeep purchase

I am currently in the process of looking for my first Jeep and honestly don't know much about them, or cars and trucks in general for that matter. I used to have a Subaru Legacy GT, but am looking to switch to something bigger and burlier.

I came across this XJ and would like to know what you think about its modifications and value for the price. I don't know enough to understand everything that has been done to it, although learning these things is something I plan to do once I buy one.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated:

I would run in through an online value website like KBB.com to see what it is valued at in your area. To be honest the mods are worth little to nothing but people think that if they dump money into a vehicle they will get it back when they sell it this is just not the case. Any money you spend on the vehicle is pretty much money you are throwing away. The motor having to be rebuilt in a little odd and the 4.0L usually last longer before needing a rebuild could be a sign of other issues. I would take it to a mechanic and have to checked out before you buy it.

not neccessarily. the motor went up in our 97 Gr ch at 160,000 and we had to put a new shortblock in it. car was completely stock and was my father's daily driver. don't remember what it was that went bad, though.

Sounds a bit pricey to me, I guess it all depends on location. 5 speed is kinda rare, but that all falls back on to what you prefer.

It's rare for the 4.0 to die that early, 5 speeds are common compared to autos

5 speeds are NOT common in an XJ. More often than not you will find an automatic behind a factory 4.0L. in XJ's. The older 2.5L 4cyl Cherokees did have 5 speeds relatively often but that's neither here nor there. Most 5 speeds in XJ's are swapped in and it is my guess that they had issues with cooling and blew the head gasket, replacing the motor and trans at the same time out of a Wrangler.

Follow RogueSpear's advice and seek professional inspection of U joints, suspension mods, engine swap and cooling system, wiring, HVAC, and general condition of the vehicle. I don't care if the person you are buying it from says they are a mechanic. For whatever it costs a mechanic to look at it (say $50), the peace of mind will be worth it.
