88 xj Cherokee 4.0 knocking

I'm looking at buying a 88 Cherokee that has a 4.0 and automatic transmission (believe aw4 but not 100%) that is knocking pretty loudly. It's a constant knock, but I believe it to be the torque converter/flex plate bolts needing to be tightened. The whole jeep has 284k but the engine has 190k allegedly. My main question is if I buy it and it's not a simple fix, can I bolt in my 83 cj7s 4.2 258 in place of the 4.0? It's a good running engine with 83k. Is it a simple bolt in swap or will adapters be needed?

If its not for the right price I wouldnt even think of it. And youd be better off going to a junk yard and getting another 4.0. Then you know it will bolt right up and you wont have issues.

Well it's got a good lift on it that's fairly recent and brand new 33" tires he's asking $2000 total for it which I found reasonable. But there again I'm new to Cherokees. I've got 4 CJ's that I've been slowly piecing together but Cherokees are a whole new thing to me haha
