If you had the choice, would you pick a TJ Rubicon over a JK Sahara? If so why?
Here's the background: I had a nice 2000 TJ Sport with a few mods, lift, tires, etc. I really liked it. Well, I had a chance to get a 350Z track model and took it. Lately I have been missing my Jeep, and I am thinking of buying another one.
I personally dont like the JKs all that much, they just arent true Jeeps to me.
They are more like your typical modern car, with plastic every friggen place,
they are larger, even more boxy, just dont seem as utilitarian.
They also changed to a V6 engine.
Larger rims, lower profile tires (isnt it about the rubber for offroading?) sheesh
Plus, I would think a stock Rubicon would go more places than a stock JK Sahara.
And you can find parts for them easier, and cheaper.
[EDIT] actually, I basically had the same choice as you, it took me about 3 second to make up my mind.
I turned down a brand new 08 JK X for a low millage 05 TJ Rubicon
Assuming price, condition, etc., makes each of them a "fair" consideration, I would go for the `04 TJ Rubi.
There is nothing unique about a `07 JK and you will be able to buy 1 of those for years to come (new or used).
While, the `04 Rubi is unique and it may not be a classic, but there want ever be anymore.
I also think turtles are neat, they have been around awhile, 4 corner drive, wheather proof, tons of armour, low center of gravity, low emmissions, eco friendly, etc.
This was a tough poll because I wanted to tell you the smart choice (the TJ!) but I really do like turtles. I have a western ornate box turtle and a couple spur-thighed tortoises from Africa (actaully, they were bron in texas, but origin wise...nevermind)
Buy the Rubi.
'03-'06 got new (better IMO) seats and cleaned up (more plastic, boo) the inside windhsield frame. Thicker roll bar padding as well.
No Jeep is unique unless you make it that way. A Rubicon is not "unique".
If you are considering the JK, it must mean you like or are at least are okay with the body style. A lot depends on if this is your dd or not. I have a 78 CJ, 2000 TJ (with probably similar mods as yours had), and a JK Rubi Unlimited. There is no doubt in my mind which one is the superior vehicle. I drive all 3 regularly, but the JK would be the last to go.
Your question though was a Sahara or a TJ Rubi... the Sahara does nothing for me... be patient, I would suggest a JK Rubi.
Remember, some traditionalists are slow to change or unwilling to change. But, I consider myself one. Love the old, but only one gets the best spot in my garage.
Before I got my JK, I was seriously considering an Audi TT or a Z
Id say go with the TJ rubi, but get one that is at least an 05. That way it is easier to get a hemi in it if you ever want to upgrade! I am putting a hemi into my jeep and have to buy an entirely new gas tank and emissions system so it wont have problems
