I'm looking at a 2002 Jeep TJ for $3800 with 140000km (87000miles).

Specs:
Engine: 6-cylinder
Transmission: 5-speed manual

Some details I remember:
Medium body rust, wheel wells and handles.
Rear tailgate hinge issues (easy fix i think)
No stereo (wiring still there) - sound bar and sub woofer(stock)
4x4 box was rebuilt last year and steering box replaced last year.
2 year old 31" tires with lots of tread left. ($800 current value on tires and a set of 5)
Interior carpet removed and floor sprayed with Line-X
Hard top only with full doors
Passes E-test and safety

One thing I am not sure about is that the guy told me the engine light goes on when he stalls it and it is a misfire code and that it goes away after five or so starts. Is this normal? Should I be worried?

There is some body rust. No rust holes on the frame. (Auto teacher said the frame looks in good shape)

I'd probably buy it. That's a low price on a low mile Jeep. If it passes inspection, it can't be too terrible. I wouldn't worry about the misfire code. I'd think that if you stalled it, it could throw a misfire code.

Thanks for the input. Everyone is telling me it is a good buy I am just nervous since it is the first car I am buying that i have to use on a daily basis.

It is 10 years old, so it won't likely be trouble free. However, you won't likely find another at that price either.

If it is not rusted away (I hate rust) it sounds like a deal but only due to the low cost.

My `02 has 135k miles and doesn't have half the issues you mentioned; 4x4 rebuilt, steering box replaced, engine codes, etc.

Sounds like it has had a rough life, but at that price you can do a lot.

steering box and transfer case arn't uncommon issues and the fact they were replaced and rebuilt is a bonus.

The rust scares me, but if you could have someone who knows Jeeps look at it and give you the thumbs up, I'd go for it.
