I found a 1995 Grand Cherokee Laredo on Craigslist looking to trade for something with better gas mileage. Since my current car has better gas mileage, and I really want a Jeep, I'm seriously considering the trade. It has the 5.2L V8 and it looks to be super clean! The owner says there are absolutely no problems with the engine or with the Jeep in general.

My current car is a 2000 Volvo V40. It's a great car, pretty darn quick, but it needs a few moderate repairs (fuel pump, catalytic converter, etc...) and that stuff is expensive. But I figure if I have a Jeep, I can do most of the repair work on it myself.

So here's kind of where I stand as far as the pros and cons of each:

pros- better gas mileage, more fun to drive on the road, really fast, Volvos are known for being safe, turbocharger

cons- expensive repairs, already been in the shop twice since October, very little ground clearance, turbocharger

pros- Jeep, with some modifications can go almost anywhere, easy to fix, parts very common, new aftermarket stereo

cons- gas mileage, will probably end up taking all my money for modifications

I've probably left something out or gotten something wrong, but here's what I'm stuck with. Any advice, thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Oh, here's the link to the ZJ:

Check for rust. Shouldn't be any if it is a local car in Knoxville, but it could be from salt country. So check carefully.

It has 190,000 miles so if it hasn't been done already, it is going to need a new timing chain. It will also need other things soon.

Do some shopping. Look for something a little newer with less mileage. There are tons and tons of these SUV's out there, so jumping on this one is a little precipitous.
