Rear axel (banjo box?)

Was pulling into my driveway the other night in first gear and I got about a foot into my driveway and there was a pop noise and the sound of gears barley grinding together. I looked under my 97 tj wrangler and was able to rotate my rear drive shaft and hear the gear grinding noise. It sounds like its coming from the banjo box. Anyonyone know what it could be?
