Jeep absorbs trailer tire blowout on 81

I was 8 feet behind a trailer when one of the rear tires exploded. Hopefully the N.Y. based trucking company will follow through on their promise to fix the damage.

8 feet, are you nuts? Maybe now you will stop tailgating.

I'm not at all surprised of the damage from 8 feet away

8ft?!? --- Were you trying to draft off of the trailer?

Try putting a safety cushion between you and the vehicle in front next time and you might be able to avoid the damage in the first place

^True.

He is lucky that no one got hurt. And he seems pretty calm about the situation if he was cut off.

Yeah, everyone is a critic. Glad you are okay and good luck with the company.

Around 3 in the afternoon on Friday the 16th I was going north on 81, approaching exit 12. I reached the overpass in the left lane going ~70, a semi cut over in front of me and seconds later one of the rear trailer tires blew. A large piece of the tire flew out and hit my Jeep in the face.

Also, the trucking company's insurance contacted me today and assumed full liability.

I'm not comfortable if I'm less than 2 seconds behind any vehicle on the interstate. But traffic often dictates otherwise. I70 & I81 are terrible, I will go out of my way to avoid them sometimes. I79 and I68 are much better.

Besides the fog light, the bug guard on the hood, the windshield, and the swirly above the damaged windshield, it looks like theres hardly any damage. Truck tires are very dangerous, be lucky it didn't go through your windshield. I know Mythbusters did something like this and it was gruesome.
