I usually stay in the area bounded by Buena Vista, COS, Denver, Glenwood Spgs.

I'm staying in COS, anything more than a 2-3hr drive to the trail, is to hard with the short days.

Yeah I hear ya, Im not much of a fan of driving far to a trail either. With the snow in vail and everything else it took my g/f 12hrs to get to denver from junction so thats out of the question. Idk if u know about this site but this will help with info on trails near u.

TrailDamage.com

Most of those trails on the site have info on when is a good time to try them and when no to go.
