I grew up there, I used to live on Smiths Point or Montauk, not sure if they still allow you to drive & camp on the beaches or not.

If you go to the regional sections of the forums there are threads on there where LI wheelers talk. If I'm not mistaken there are very limited legal options.

With permits, one can travel on certain beaches. BUT.. you need to contact the state and find out which ones are available and how much the permits are. Usually range from $60-$100. AND... that isn't the real exciting dune running you see on TV. There are all sorts of rules IE Speed, where you can or can't travel while out there, some you NEED to be fishing, mandatory equipment, etc.

Aside from that, there is NO legal, public place on the island to go wheeling.. at least not that would actually require the use of 4WD. There are some old dirt roads but one can drive a Corolla on them...

Best bet, join a club and expect to travel off the island.
Long Island Off Road would be a great bet: LONG ISLAND OFF ROAD CLUB, Inc.

Talk soon,
