It's closed because of too much traffic, and the mods here are considering it illegal wheeling... So watch what you say.

i think you can still go there if you have the DEC permits tho? so as long as you have the permits.. its not illegal wheeling.

EDIT::

scratch that... from what i just read, they have been trying to block off hot water path and toppings rd to people that live there and emergency vehicles only.... darn it

i went pass there around 3 pm the barrels where there along with a dec ranger.i was going to stop and ask him about it but had to be someplace on time.when i went there fri. the barrels where still there and the road from the pavement to the front of that open area was blue stoned.i think there going to make it a nature trail access site.if this is true they will probly put up a gate at the entrance and keep it locked.i'll drive passed it tomarrow and see what's up.

Boy, all that seems like a real pain in the butt.

If the fact that you just got shut out of a place you have been able to wheel legally for years, with a permit, gets you really ticked (as it should) joining a club will help you get involved to fight those issues so we don't continue to lose more.

Do you all realize there is a 4x4 club right on the island that has monthly trail rides and by joining them, you gain access to well over 120 events held every weekend throughout New England and New York?
Dues are something like $40-50 a year. You'd avoid all the lack of knowledge if an area is open or closed and more importantly, you'd avoid a costly ticket.
Say someone went and moved the barrels, because they felt they should be allowed back on this road. Whether we should be or not is not the issue at this point, the state doesn't want trucks there and they will ticket if you are caught.
I'm guessing a ticket for trespass on state property will be close to, if not more than $100.

I go wheeling for the challenge, the beauty, the relaxation, etc. I find it very hard to enjoy myself if I'm wondering the entire time I'm out, "am I wheeling illegally?" I would guess that most people feel the same way.

If you would really like to wheel, contact the folks over at Long Island Off Road.

They can get you out pretty much every weekend and have you meeting lots of same minded Jeep/4x4 friends, people to help wrench on your truck, etc.

Aside from them, there are 10 more clubs throughout New England that wheel as regularly, if not more often.
East Coast 4WD Association's Northeast Region D
Hope this helps.
Talk soon,

well if you notice in the trail, all the telephone poles blocking the roads (that people moved) and alot of the trails say you need a permit or specifically NO VEHICLE ACCESS.... its no good
