hey there guys, im not planning on selling the jeep......yet, but was wondering what you guys think i could get for it and any advice on getting more for it.
its a 1987 yj. with a 258 4.2L engine and stock front and rear axles, transmission and a rebuilt (about 2 years ago, maybe 1000 miles) transfer case. *VERY litte rust. any rust i find is usually attacked with a wire brush and then brought back to bare metal then repainted. *4 inch Rubicon express lift with 33x12.5 dick cepeks on 15 inch american racing wheels. All under a year old. MAYBE 300 miles on them. *all of the fluids (coolant, transmission, front and rear diffs, power strearing, washer fluid and engine oil) changed regularly. engine oil once a month with a quart of mystery oil every two months. *front and rear end greased along with driveshaft. *new radiator, hoses, thermostat and housing. *weber 2 barrel *soft top (with rear tinted plastic) has only been on for one year. i bought it new along with the soft doors two years ago and last year i had a hard top and doors on. sold the hard top but i still have the doors. spot of rust on them. besides that that have been rebuilt and greased and are awaiting paint. black. *new radio and polk audio speakers along with, i believe, a 6 inch bazooka tube. *new battery *new starter solenoid *new starter *new battery terminals and wires *aftermarket seats from summit *center console *new valve cover gasket *new rear main seal -no sludge in oil pan *new oil pan gasket *new distributer cap and rotor *new e3 plugs *new wires *new ignition coil. epoxy 40,000 *new fan clutch *new belt *all black hood and hinges along with mirrors *new 6 inch fender flares to cover tires *new fuel filter, fuel pump and stainless steel brake lines *2 year old cat back. will be putting in new header and complete exhaust system. *new headlights *custom front bumper *110 lumen lights on front bumper. *new timing chain and housing 2 months ago. *i also have a new extended driveshaft and sye that i haven't put in yet. bad. *there is a connection issue at times with the driver side brake light. works if you turn the blinker on. (maybe you guys have some ideas on that one) *another issue it the headlight switch is acting up and the lights will shut off at times for a few seconds. i did find the short and would fix before selling. *the tailgate hinges are sagging so in order to close it you have to pick it up a little bit. *the odometer reads 110,000 and the title says 111,000 but i had a mechanic take a look at it and he says it has been rebuilt and has maybe 60-80,000 miles on it. over all this jeep is awesome. thanks

What engine, transmission, and axles? How did you mechanic determine that the engine has 30k-50k miles on it than the odometer reads? Did the previous owner abuse the rig causing premature engine failure?

The fact it has a 2bbl weber carb i would say you are reaching for the stars at 10k at this point we can only assume and i am assuming youre trying to get rid of a YJ or CJ since nothing else except maybe old XJs ran carbs. But like already stated we need details of the actual vehicle

At the price, first make sure it's mechanically perfect. Steering tight, no vibrations, no ticks or odd noises. When a person looks at a vehicle, the more 'little' things they find, the more they assume that they are going to find other issues.
The brake light issue might be the turn signal switch, I think mine did something similar. I picked up a replacement at rockauto for under $20. I borrowed a steering wheel puller and had the job finished in about 20 minutes. The Diamond Plate under the door is going to be a red flag. Most people will assume that any area with diamond plate is hiding rust even if it is perfect underneath, the finish on the doors will probably be another issue. Honestly though, even if you fix all that, $10-12000 is probably a stretch, especially on a carbureted YJ. It's a great Jeep, but at that price you're up against some great condition TJ's and really nice restored CJ's. |

thanks for the advice on the brake light issue Jawbox. ill try that out in the next couple of days. i was going to add something about the diamond plate there. i know that that is a prime rust/body damage sign. it is perfect under them though. siliconed water tight. just through it on there to cover the existing holes from the stock step. i am painting the doors to either match the top or do a gloss black with in the next week or so.

Honestly it is basically a sotck (axels, motor, trans) early yj. It is in good shape but still not perfect. I would see this jeep going for 5-6k around here if you are lucky. At 10-12k you can buy a TJ rubi or a mint sport....

$4,500.00 tops. So many yj out there with more and better mods (axels for example) for cheaper than $4,500.00

Phew i hate to beat ya down dude but my old mans 95 yj body was a little rougher with a 5spd 2.5 lifted on brand new 33s interior replaced hard and soft top with some bolt on we barely got 2500 for it. But hell its your jeep you can ask whatever you want. But just realize that you might hold it for awhile look on craigslist at what similar jeeps are going for in your area?

Being in the region, I can say you might find the right rich'ole bastard on ACK to buy it for $10k to furnish the summer house they'll never be at.
For a Jeep guy, nobody will go near $10k. |

That could be an accurate response if it was a CJ, but the YJ's don't seem to command the same $$$ with everything being the same condition. If it had FI, that would help, but I'd estimate $5 - 6k as well. You can post it for as much as you want, and work it from there, that'll be the only way to really figure out what's it worth. I've seen CJ's in similar condition in NE go for that price, but never a YJ.

thats exactly what i was thinking djflyy. i would never expect to get that much from a jeep person, but i have plenty for time to find that right buyer considering i still want it and have no need to sell it yet. thank you everyone for the input and information.
