Wrangler MTR w/kevlar vs BFG KM2's

looking for insight and opinions on these two tires ( still reading up past threads, but any fresh news is welcome )

i would be buying either tire brand new, 33x12.50 or 35x12.50 ( yes,i realize the kevlar mtr doesnt come in a 35 yet )

Also, these would not be on a daily driven TJ, i have wj for my daily stuff.

But, this will be drove around on the streets on weekends and to and from the trail.

Most my trails i run ( rausch creek, pa ) are a mix between rocks and mud, so i need good grip on the rocks, and be able to clean out after pulling through the mud.

thoughts?

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I'll be needing a new set of shoes really soon and I've been torn between the new MTRs with kevlar and the BFG KM2s. At first I didn't like the new MTRs and it seemed to me the tread and side biters were a joke. But from the looks of things, the new MTR is far superior to the old one. It'll definitely have better sidewalls than the KM2s as well. I also like the larger and more spaced lugs on the new MTRs versus the KM2s. Goodyear is also apparently the only tire company that is allowed to develop and test their tires using one of the US supercomputers that helps to develop our nuclear weapons. Sounds cool to me whether or not it is a gimmick.

So overall, I'm leaning towards the MTRs. The looks have really grown on me and seems like it will do well in mud and rocks. My main concern was with the side lugs, but it looks as if the side lugs are designed that way to flex and grab around and obstacle better.

I wish I could remember which thread I saw it in, but one guy said he only got 24K out of his KM2's with no unusual driving habits or terrain. The compound on the tires did feel pretty pliable when I saw them in person too, so I don't doubt that guys experience with them. I think the old KM wear-like-iron trait might be a thing of the pastwith BFG "MT"s?

From my experience, Best to get for all terrain is the one with kevlar. They got good grip in dry and semi wet road.

lol true. The Wrangler Silent Armors are a great all terrain. However, we're talking about two mud tires here. The KM2 and the new MTR with kevlar

From my experience, the new MT/R's are a step up in the rocks and do much better in the mud. The sidewalls are also functional to give grip in the rock and to dig out of ruts. KM2's don't clean as well as the previous and the sidewall lugs don't do much good.

I find it hard to believe that the sidewall lugs on the new MTR's work better in ruts than the ones on the KM2's. It looks like the MTR sidewalls are made strictly for the rocks and I question their effectiveness even then.

They are rut-happy warriors; I got out in some clay/mud v-ditch nastiness on Sunday and straddled a sick rut and climbed my way out using only the sidewalls on both sides. It was so even-keeled and easy that my wife didn't even realize that we were balanced over a 3 foot drop...

They really are some fun tires. Sorry to keep gushing but this is the first set of tires I've ever had that just keeps impressing me.

Well I guess considering GY did use a supercomputer (that the US uses to develop it's nuclear arsenal) to design the new MTR... I sure hope the new MTR kicks butt

"At Sandia National Labs, Goodyear borrowed time on the same supercomputers that have helped design key components of the U.S. nuclear arsenal to virtually model the real-time interaction of more than 25 different tire components as a tire rolls on and off the pavement. They also digitally modeled various candidate tread patterns, seeking the right balance of rock crawling grip with the ability to quickly flush mud out of the tire’s deep grooves, without needing to travel to Moab or the Louisiana bayou to repeatedly test prototypes."

But really if you look closely at the MTR sidewall it has much more flex and grab than the solid side blocks would offer on the KM2. The new MTR is a winner.

That so-called super computer couldn't figure out something as simple as human nature's desire to have black walls though. Left that design aspect up to someone who FAILED.
