Why Bumpstops?

I haven't really looked into them, so I very well maybe thinking they are one thing, that they aren't. My perception of a "bump stop" is the rubber part, inside the coil spring (on an XJ). How do Extended bumpstops help articulation? It seems to me, that by extending the bumpstop, it would hit the axle earlier (than the stock bumpstop on a lifted XJ), and therefore limit how far the axle will articulate. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

A bumpstop limits upward travel of the axle. It's used to prevent the tire from stuffing too deeply into the wheelwell where pointy screws live,or to prevent the tires from rubbing or bumping the fender flares. So when the tire tries to move the axle up enough that the tire would rub where it shouldn't, the bumpstop will push the body up out of the way so the tire doesn't rub. Bumpstops need to be the right length, that is for sure. Too long and they inhibit articulation. Too short and the tires will rub where they shouldn't.

Also too short of bumpstops can over compress your springs and cause sagging.
