don't understand why a tire manufacture will make the same tire in 35 1250 17 and 315/70 17 when there so close in size but overlook something like a 285/75 17 which bridges the gap between a 33inch tire and a 35in.
First off, you will find very few 75 aspect ratio 17" tires. For the most part a 75 ratio in a 16 equals a 70 ratio in a 17 when you get into the 265-315 range for width. This keeps the trucks happy with the factory speedo programming and kind of standardizes tire height. If you want a 34" go to a 305/70-17. The 35 is a US size hold over and you will probably be seeing less and less as the metric size replaces it.
I would think there would be more demand for a 34 inch tire. It would fill the wheel wells better then a 33 with a lift and not have the rubbing problems a 35 can cause. Little easier on gas, a bit lighter and a bit less need for gear changes. Something like a 285/75 17 would be better in snow and on ice the a 35 because its a bit narrower. Probably better in the deep mud too. I'm obviously in the minority on this one but to me its about the ideal size tire for a jk with a 2 inch lift.
Different tire sizes are hugely expensive for the companies to create. A lot more than most would imagine. Demand needs to be significant for them to create and the lifted jeep crowd who wants something between a 33 and a 35 with a 17 inch wheel is probably not big enough.
another one is the 305/65 17 vs 33 1250 17. Copper makes there pro in both sizes. I got to thinking this morning (I know, dangerous) if its due to the fact there sold overseas where American sizing isn't used.
These tires are only nominally 35" tires. Most 35" tires have a true diameter of 33.5 - 35". So they have covered the real issue - your 34" tire. They just want to call them 35's since they sell better.
For example, BFG KO2 AT's come in 61 sizes. They routinely add 10 sizes per year. I don't know of any table from BFG that shows true diameter for BFG products. But, for many of their other lines, Michelin lists true diameter in their catalogues.

Below is the height disclaimer. Tires are measured on a specific rim width at max inflation pressure and freestanding (not under a vehicle).
>> The sizes shown are average design values for tires measured on specified measuring rim widths. Some tires may vary from this value by +/-3% of the section height (affecting overall diameter), and +/-4% of the section width.
I would think it would crown in the middle a bit depending on width and sidewall height and increase the diameter the same as it divots in the center with no air pressure. Both are negligible as the most of your tire height loss when installed on the vehicle is from the sidewall bulge and the tread flattening out at the road surface in relation to inflation pressure. The radius from the center of the wheel to the top of the tire should stay approx 1/2 of advertised diameter or the diameter of the tire parallel to the pavement should be close to advertised diameter. Measured height will always be less.
There is a cosmetic difference and a difference in load capacity (same E load rating but different specs) between those BFGs you mentioned
I didn't see a 315 and a 35 in the KM2 or the Cooper STT Pro.
The STT Pro is made in a 37x12.50 and a 37x13.50 with minimal size difference but 2 different load rating.
There are plenty of tires available in a 34" height range. There is not the void that you make out to be.
If your set on a 34, look at a manufacturer that makes that size or change your wheel size to get a different selection.
So BFG doesn't offer the size you want.... move on to the next tire.
I just used bfg as an example. the two tires I have my eyes on are the sst pro and the new nitto ridge grappler. the sst comes in 295/70/17 which is close to what I want and according to what ive read nitto is suppose to make the rg in both 295/70/17 and 285/75/17. I plan to use the existing rims on my willys. I like the look and cant see spending over a grand to change. Not that its totally out of the question but its my plan so far. Contrary to some here I have had good luck with bfg tires. If they made the k02 in one of those sizes my questions would end. They do make the km2 in 285/75/17 and the mud terrains have given me good service but after 20k they get so loud there tough to live with. At least for a 60 year old man. Right now the ridge grappler is at the top of my list. Mostly because the sst pro looks a lot like the bfg and I worry that they too will get noisy
Here is the lack of selection between a 33" and a 35" tire. These range from close to 33" to close to 35".
For a 17" wheel: (number of tires in that size)
295/70 (14)
285/75 (7)
305/70 (7)
34x10.50 (2)
Total 30 different tires/sizes
For an 18" wheel: (number of tires in that size)
325/60 (6)
305/65 (2)
285/70 (3)
34x10.50 (1)
295/70 (9)
325/65 (12)
285/75 (7)
305/70 (10)
Total 50 different tires/sizes
80 different tires to choose from and 12 different sizes (more if you want to get picky) is not a shortage or void.
If you want a tire between a 33 and 35, you have plenty of options. If you choose to limit your options by only looking at 1 wheel size, that's your choice.
The tire size you want IS available if you really want it.
What makes more sense.....
Changing molds and production to make a hand full of customers happy?
Offering a wide selection of sizes (height and width) for various wheel sizes and expecting the hand full of customers that want a specific height and width to choose their wheel size accordingly to get the perfect size tire?
The main reason I like THIS SITE is that when you enter the size it lists the tires available in that size... as well as showing near sizes to find wider etc...
