Uniroyal Liberators: Cheap price = cheap tire?
I've searched the site looking for user reviews of the Uniroyal Liberator A/T and haven't really found much. I've seen a few posts where people say they've heard good things but not much else. I was all set to get some BFGs but I have an opportunity to buy some slightly used Liberators with a lot of treadlife left and really wouldn't mind saving the cash. That being said I don't want to buy crappy tires just to save some scratch. I just don't know much about these tires.
I'll only be doing 'light' wheeling so I don't need anything too aggressive. I just want something that will provide good traction in the light to moderate snow that we get here in Southwest Missouri. Have any of you guys ever used Liberators? Has anyone had bad experience with them? Please, don't flame me for not searching because, again, I did. Just didn't find any useful (to me) information. Thanks in advance for your time and input. I appreciate it.

I've got a friend with those tires on his 2wd WJ. There is nothing wrong with em at all. Good street tires. If you do any off roading at all I would go with the BFG A/Ts or GoodYear Wrangler Silent Armors. I don't think those Liberators would hold up too well off road. The BFG A/Ts and the GoodYear Wrangler Silent Armors will do awesome in snow much better than the Liberators ever will. Most sizes of both the BFG AT and the GY Silent Armor tires qualified for some kind of heavy duty snow duty classification as well. Can't go wrong with either of those.
Edit: And if it helps any I have run both tires. I ran the GoodYears on my old WJ and currently run the BFG ATs

good tire, but there really made for the street, the sidewalls arent really that thick. Uniroyal liberator is a wal-mart brand tire

I purchased my old S-10 with an almost-new set of Liberators on it. Good tires, but like someone said here, basically a street tire. They did pretty good on Michigan's snow covered roads, but I would not consider them an all terrain. A BFG AT is a far more capable off-road tire, while being just as good on the road.

I really appreciate the feedback guys. I'm definitely leaning towards the BFGs unless my buddy makes me an offer I can't refuse. Since I'm hearing that they're not total crap tires I don't feel it'd be waste for me to get them...assuming the price is right.
Thanks for your input. -Brodie

Bringing back a really old thread but I bought the liberators at walmart because I need a new set of tires in a pinch. I did some research before buying them, and I saw really good things. I have had the for over 10k miles and they are honestly one of the best tires I have ever owned. BFG owns michellin and uniroyal, so they are a quality tire. Do not let the price fool you, I have put them to the test in mud sand and rocks and they are a great tire and look brand new still. I would reccomend these tires to anyone who needs an all terrain tire that has really good road manners also.

If the price is right, run them until they leave you. Don't get hung up on the brand on the sidewall, unless you are a label man. My experience on tires in the past 8 years, every one of them does not last. I don't know if it is the economy making them cut corners to survive, or the EPA bearing down on them, but I have gone through 7 sets of tires on my truck.
Have went from two sets of factory Firestone tires (tread seperation on 2 good condition tires, no damage, no excessive wear, properly inflated) to some kelly-springfield made Wild Trac to nitto terra grapplers, to yoko geolander at's, and two sets of michelins. Thinking the michilens would make it more than 40k, I plunked a chunk of change on a set, and left me at, 45k. They gave me a good chunk off of a second set of michi's, and they are gonna play out at, 45k. Mostly highway, off road is a well maintained gravel county road. My best "value-for-the-money" winner is the set of Wild Tracs that got me 35k for less than half the price of the michelins. When these michelinls leave me, i'm either going back to a wild trac, or coopers, cause i can't justify the extra $$ for BFGs or Michelins that wear out as fast as a store brand or a knock off. |
