Tire Time!

I have been reading review after review of tires for weeks now and I am still caught up on which kind to buy. As of now I think im going with the mickey thompson baja m/t 33X12.50R15. I need a good street tire with bad a** looks and great with rain and snow. I do trail rides every month or so as well so could anyone tell me if this is a good tire to go with or should I be looking else where. Thanks.

I did months of reasearch on tires before I decided on Goodyear mtrs or bf mud terrains. I went w/ mtrs because of the more modern look, rock capability, and longivity.
(50-60,000 ish kms). In my research I heard (over a year ago) about the new bf kms mts that just came out. I wanted them, but did'nt want to wait. Those will be my next set of rubbers. The mtbs are nice but will wear fast. I say go with a mtr or bf mt for the best bang for your buck and street use.

I work with tires and like the new KM2 also but unfortunately I am having to wait because I don't want to run any larger than a 15" wheel right now. My BFG MTs do well on the road, I ran the Nitto Terra Grapplers for a while and they are crap. BFG ATs are the best all around tire IMO if you dont need a mud tire......but I do.

Good call. I'm also waiting until the KM2 drops a few sizes as well (Plus i have to wear down my MTRs!). The BFG ATs are a excellent all around tire. It's what I used before my MTRs and they lasted almost 4 years before I got rid of them and they still had plenty of usable tread left.

Any mud tire is going to suck in deep puddles at high speeds, so be mindful of that. They tend to pull themselves on top of the water rather violently, over an all terrain tire that does it much smoother. That being said, I have the MTZs, and they are probably the best mud terrain I've used as an all around tire. They do very well on the street, and wet weather traction is pretty good. I haven't had any problems out of them. They are wearing really well, so I expect to get pretty good mileage out of them. I've ripped a few of the lugs up off road, but it hasn't affected the tire in any way, and I've yet to have a flat of any kind. I did get a pretty nice dent on the lip of my rim on a sharp rock, but it didn't do anything to the tire. I'll replace them with the same.

Probably need to figure out if you really want bad a** looks or a good performing tire as your main concern. The two are usually at opposite ends of the scale when talking about street tires. BFG ATs or Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors are some of the best performing "street" tires that are off road capable. Neither is bad a** looking. Swamper Boggers look cool but good luck driving them on the street. Somethin like the BFG MT is a decent compromise but it is still a compromise.

I wouldnt buy a mud type tire just for the looks. Keep in mind that the aggesive tread will be louder, wear faster, and rain, ice and hard packed snow performance can be pretty poor.

If you are looking for good handling on wet pavement stay FAR away from the Goodyear M/TR's.

I ran them for about 3 years on a lifted TJ, and I really liked them on light trails and rocks, but they SUCK on wet roads, also nothing special in the mud, in fact, for a MUD tire, they weren't much better than an AT, just more expensive. I did a 360 more than once, at relatively low speeds on wet backroads, thank God noone was going the other way. They are also pretty noisy IMO compared to other MT's, but they wore quite well for me. I got 60k out of a set, and I don't rotate as often as I should.

The last set of MT's I ran was Pro-Comp's MTR, and though you hear some negatives about them, I was very happy with what I got for the price. I was running them on my quad cab Hemi 4x4, and they had excellent road manners and alot less noise than the Goodyears, and much better wet weather handling. I didn't do any rock crawling with them (kinda hard to explain to the wife how you smashed in the fender of your new $35,000 truck!) but they did pretty well in light mud.

I wouldn't hesitate to put the Pro-Comps back on another DD, although if it is primarily a trail rig then a few extra bucks on better tires is definitely money well spent.

My tires have never been that clean. I don't think I could make them look like that if I wanted to. My sidewalls are kind of chunked, and I have a couple of lugs that are missing.

Goodyears are not mud tires. The MT/R means "Maximum Traction/Rocks. Not Not mud terrain. As the label implies, they are a awesome rock tire. Sticks like glue. I like them.
