Why does rim size matter with tire chains?

I need some more info? Do you mean rim width? ex(8", 9") or Diameter ex(15", 16")

The width should not matter at all the the wheel diameter will make a huge difference for this reason

For example if you have a LT265/70R16 and a LT265/70R17 The 17" tire is 1" taller in overall diameter and would then need a larger set of chains.

Not sure if this is what you meant but I hope it helps

My overall is 35 inch tire. But I have 18 inch rims. I was told that rim size matters because they don't want to scratch my rims.
