Thornbird tires any good?

Hello,

First post here but multiple Jeep owner over the years. I've been looking at tires and love the look of the Thornbirds. I do a bit of city driving and some trails. Maybe 1k miles per year. No serious rock climbing or anything. I'd do a 33 or 35 x 12.5 on 15" rims. Anyone have experience with these tires they can share - good or bad?

Thanks

Pretty terrible on both the road and offroad. Stuck to some km2's or mtr's. They are both good wearing tires on the road and have proven themselves offroad as well.

I've never used them, anecdotaly I've heard them referred to as "turdbirds" for as long as I've been off roading and tires (besides speed rating) were something to think about.

Look nice though.

Turdbirds or Thornturds? I've always heard the latter.

I've always known them as thornturds though I have never run them and don't know anyone who has.

They just don't have a good reputation though even on the forums people don't run them. I too love their look though.

Seriously?

They're one of the worst tires ever made.

Thornbirds wouldnt be a good fit for you from the sounds of it. I work at discount tire and have a lot of experience with different tires and my favorites are the goodyear MTR and cooper STT that's what I'd recommend. Now for the km2s they are good an all for mud hence mud terrain in km2s case that's all. When I ran 33-12.50-15 km2s on rocks and dirt there is a noticeable difference from the mtr and stt. (I'm currently running the stt and live them)

That article was written in 2007. Anyway, I can't believe Interco even bothers to make these tires--they're either stupid or these tires have a particularly good profit margin and just keep selling to people who don't know any better and don't ask people who do before buying.

If there is a market for them, they won't stop making them.

I'd definitely look at the super swamper radials. I have them on my little CJ, not a bad tire. They won't last as long as some other tires will though. But at 1K a year, they should last a long time. They are very classic looking tread, so they look good on a CJ too, in my opinion.

KOH often gets thrown out in threads as examples of whether products are good or not. Would it surprise people to hear that I've seen Thornbirds on 4600 class cars at KOH? Of course that probably had more to do with budget than ability as racing is expensive.

Thornbird aka the Thornturd is an excellent tire for a mallcrawler. They seem to work extremely well Coated with a gallon of tire shine while parked at a carshow or local mall.
