Shocks with a Bigger Lift

So here's the deal I have a 2.5in Rancho lift right now (shocks, springs) and I want to go 4 inches.
I'm going to just buy the springs, no kit or anything, but I was wondering if I could pull off running the 2.5in lift shocks for a while? is it critical? or will it not work at all?
thanks

Hi Dude,

Kinda highjack, so hopin you don't mind...How do you like the Rancho Lift? I was thinking of putting the same one on my Jeep to get my bodywork away from the rocks a bit more, and was just wondering how it rode etc. What shocks are you using?

Bye for now

I like the rancho a lot, granted I don't have experience with the other lifts out there. I've been very pleased. I've got the RS5000's. I was going to go with the 9000's but in the end didn't think it was worth the extra $$.
I'm going bigger because 2.5in looks small to me now...

The shocks will be fine, as long as you don't over extend them. They will be too short, and will now be the limiting factor. You can destroy them.

Are you going to address your trackbars, and wheelbase too, or just roll with it?

trackbars I have already dealt with under the current lift (and SYE for that matter)
and I'm gonna go with some 33's and new wheels while I'm at it, it's just one thing at a time at this point because I'm a poor 18 yr old.
I prob. wont wheel with the small shocks, its more of a temporary thing while I can get more money...

Is this your final answer?

tjones07 - You are better off matching the shocks to the suspension height. While you may be OK by not going off-road; pot holes, speed bumps, gutters,... can all cause the shock to over extend. It's better to do it right on your schedule than have to do an unplanned for repair because you let yourself get in to big of a hurry to put the higher lift on your Jeep.

yea seems like its not worth waiting on the shocks then. Well now comes the question, stick with Rancho...or head in a different direction...
