red and yellow paint markings on tire?

I just purchased a set of BFG A/T tires. They are 31x10.50R15's. They are mounted on stock Canyon wheels. They have a red paint dot and a yellow paint dot one each tire. From what I can gather, they are on there for balancing purposes. It seems the yellow dot should go towards the valve stem. Does this really matter? The tire shop installed the tires but did not align the dots with the valve stem. Only one wheel has what I would call excessive wheel weights. It has 3 1/4 ounces on the outside. Any help apprieciated.

Yes, the yellow dot generally denotes the lightest spot on the tire, which is why you try to match it up with the valve stem.

Doesn't matter. I'm sure they all balanced out fine. The would have broken the tire down and rotated it if it hadn't anyways.

As others have said it has to do with the balancing, the local shop uses different colored chalk because it washes off in the first car wash but each shop does things differently.
