So that you don't run out in the middle of doing it I'd get 3 cans of black and 4 cans of clear. You can always return them if need be, but it sucks to run out in the middle of working.

Doing several coats of clear is going to be crucial to turn the satin black glossy that is why I suggest 4 of them.

Since you are about to do this I will stress that a long lasting, good looking finish depends on the prep work. Spend more time than you think you need to sanding every little nook and crannny. If you clean them and still see a shiny spot then sand a little more and clean again. Repeat as required before painting.

Good luck and post up pics when done.

Thanks. I didn't want to have to run out in the middle of the project thats why I asked. The weather here doesn't appear like it'll be warm enough for the recommended temperatures so it might have to wait til another weekend, but I will have pics as soon as I do get it done. Thanks for all the words of advice and incredible looking jeep.

Well time to bring back an old post... I am curious if you removed the tape from the machined lip and clear coated that with the rest of the rim or if you just left it taped and cleared them.... im about to do the same thing to my ravines but am debating between charcoal or black... any input would be great... I have a bright silver metallic jeep with everything accented black...

I did not re-clear the lip. If you do be sure to scuff up the existing clear for adhesion.

I think black centers would look best on a silver jeep with black accents.

Take your time, good luck, and post pics!!!

Thanks for the input... ... This is one of two projects i have slated for this summer... The other is installing a set of OYR corners with oval leds... I'm planning on taking detailed pics of both and starting a build thread...

Do you have to remove the tires or do it before you put the tires on? Or can you paint the wheels with the tires mounted? Thanks

Does anybody have a picture of ravines painted black? I'm thinking about getting my ravines out of my attic and painting them black. I think it would look good on a white LJ.

very awesome thats exactly what i was planning on doing to mine soon. i think its gonna look amazing on my dark blue LJ. i think black rims are overdone and i dont like the lighter colored ones.. i thought gunmetal with a silver lip would look best. so glad i found this thread, it definitely made up my mind!
