opinion on life of tires (as in shelf life, not miles)
anybody in here trust 20 year old tires goin down the highway. fellow told me he bought these tires new 2-3 years ago and he tried to sell em to me... but hmmmm... he can't seem to recall where he bought em from... DOT dates them to 1987. he swears he bought new.. i don't knw any shop that has a set of tires in stock for that long... even if they were stored in climate controlled area, rubber still starts breaking down as soon as it is exposed to air.... right?
thanks/ruggles

also, i already tried to search this topic, and this isn't a tread wear issue, this is just how long rubber can sit around without deteriorating to a dangerous state.

Interesting situation. I would be a little concerned too. Did they look weather checked or in other words cracked? I think that would be the most telling sign. Other than that I have no advice.

I'd have a hard time trusting 20 year old tires on my vehicle, especially when blazing down the highway at high speeds. But as Fargo noted, a 20 year old tire should have some tell-tell signs of old age with weather cracking.
When in doubt, walk away. Better to spend a few dollars more and feel good & secure w/ your purchase than buy something you regret.

Rubber decomposes. It's not a miracle substance that will last forever. The insides of the tires are probably already corroded. The only place those tires belong are in your dumpster.
