New Tires: Federal Couragia MT

I’ve decided to try a different route on tires this year, I’m going to be getting a set of Federal Couragia MT’s in 33’s. I know they are not the big name brand around town but I’ve seen a few of these up close and on the trail and they seem to handle everything great. The lug & voids on this tire definitely have a more aggressive tread then my Maxxis Bighorns.

I liked the way the Bighorns have handled everything, so looking forward to see how these do. Most of my wheeling is weekend warrior and daily driver so this will be a pretty good test on these tires as how well they work. I drive 65miles round trip for work so that should give me a good idea of their street manners and I also have Rausch Creek & Wellsville to test them out in the mud & rocks.

I will keep you posted on how they do when I get a couple trips on them, the first one being the Badlands 4wd park in Indiana.

I will post some pics of them in a couple days after I get them mounted on the Jeep.

Chris

It has a very "Cooper" look to it? Do they make it?
If so, I'm guessing that it's from the same rubber stock as their other bargain shelf products like the Definity Dakota M/T from Pep Boys ---- a fairly soft compound with sidewalls that are prone to tearing when moist.
It's tough to take an offroad tire seriously that is $128 each and often buy 3 get one free...

I don't think they are like the Dakota MT's from pepboy. They are made by Federal, which I dont think has any relations to Cooper or others. I've seen alot of these being run by guys in comps overseas along with the Simex Trekker tires. Now if onyl the Simex were DOT approved here I would be getting those.

Well I guess only time will tell on the sidewalls & handling. I hit the rocks quite a bit, so should get a good idea after a couple trips.

$128 is alot better then $180-$200ea for 33's. I cant believe how much they've gone up since I bought my first pair.... the Bighorns I got for $130 and now look at them, there's lots of people that love them and they raised their prices to $185ea.

Oh, I smell what you're saying and I appreciate it. I did a little checking and I'm still not sure who makes them (Federal is in Taiwan; not sure if they make them though...).
But I found some specs that say it's a 3-ply sidewall. Hmmmmm, that's interesting.

Please keep the thread alive and report back. Go thrash them.

Ahhh was just about to post the info from the review boards, but see you found them.

Yea I'll definately keep this thread alive & open, with reviews & pics periodically. I have a couple trips coming up soon, in which they will thoroughly be put to a good testing & threashing.

I have a trips to Badlands 4wd park in Indiana coming, with some great rock crawling & muddy trail riding in the mix as well. The will be hitting Rausch Creek for the first time, which I hear has even better rock crawling there and nice mix of muddy trails too. And will also be hitting Wellsville if its still open this spring/summer since there is a good amount of mud there.

Yea I know that some will be skeptical cause it's not the NAME brand BFG, Goodyear etc.... and I've already heard that you'll get what you pay for, being a cheaper tire everyone thinks it's crap, but contrare... look at the Maxxis Bighorns, prime example of cheap tire when it first came out and now its up there on the list of what alot of people run.

Nope not yet.... biggest so far is 285/75/16 or a 33x12.50x15
You might have to email them to see if they are planning on bigger sizes.

I'm still kindof waiting to see what new radial tires "Pitbull" comes out with. Supposedly they are looking at making 33's / 35's / 37's in a "Rocker" Radial form, since they are bias-ply now. But I heard they wont be out until late spring or summer

They have 35's for 17 and 18 only so far.

Interested to see how they are on wet asphalt too.

Well hopefully will know in a couple days after I have them mounted, since some of our snow is melting here and calling for rain and then snow next week.

I think in wet asphalt that tire will get low traction. But if you put it in a rough terrain you will see how good it is. Thats what I think.

Well I finally got them mounted and was pleased that they actually seem to take less weight then the Bighorns had on them since you could see the outline of the old weights.

The center tread is definately nice & open compared to the Bighorns which should make these things clena out well in the mud. It's supposed to warm up this week & rain, so will try getting them out in the mud, once I'm feeling better since have been sick for a couple days.

Heres the pics:
