New tires, 31 or 33?

Its time for new tires on the jeep. My rear tires are down to about 1/8th inch left and that isnt enough for me to be happy in the mud. I drive a 1990 XJ 4.5" lift currently rolling 31 1050 15 Discoverer STT (old tread style)

I drive her just about everyday just a few miles. I go back and forth between my car and the XJ. Everyday that i do drive it, I get her dirty. SO my tires need to perform. I primarily mud, dont have too much experience with rocks but I just moved here form Florida so this is my first summer up north, who knows where it will take me

On memorial day I will be driving about 150 miles south to the family farm with my wife and 6mo daughter. I will have at the least 2 new tires on there and this is where you guys come in;

1. Can I buy 2 new tires and leave my Coopers up front without some funky vibrations or harsh wear?
b. How bad would it be if the back 2 were 33 and the front 31? How would they wear over that drive and for about 2 weeks after until I bought the other pair?

2. My jeep didnt come with a spare so I will be keeping one of thet ires on the rim and mount in the back. (This means Im thinking of some cheep black rims but Im not sure what my backspacing is... ideas?)

I can either buy 4 tires at once, or 2 tires, 2 rims and new shocks all around before this trip. I would like to do 2 and everything else if possible

Can I Have your opinion of the below brands? My Budget is about 200 per tire. Some cross that line but they look worth it.

I have the BFG KM2. Love them offroad in dirt and mud but I don't like them on pavement. They feel a little squirrely on the rare occasions when I go on pavement, especially in rain (no sipes). They are also pretty loud. Those drawbacks will be mitigated a bit in your XJ versus my TJ, just due to the longer wheelbase, so you might want to hear from a long wheelbase guy instead. Around me, all the pickup truck guys have them in the 32 to 35 sizes and swear by them for their long, heavy vehicles.

If go to 33s, the on-road driving characteristics will change significantly (acceleration, braking, cornering) all of which will degrade. Of course you will gain in the off road capability department. Going to 33s you might want to consider re-gearing to gain back some of what you'll lose going to a larger tire too.

I know this is just splitting hairs but will I notice a large difference if I went 32x11.5? Does the width effect anything from 10.5 to 11.5? :cheers:

Out of the ones you have listed, I'd go with the Goodyear MTR/K.


I wouldn't even consider the KM2 if you like the mud.

Yeah I am primarily mud and trails when Im not driving to work. Ive been told the MTR's wear really funny...

Any suggestions I havent listed? Id go boggers if I didnt need them to last more than 500 miles

Nitto Mud Grapplers or Super Swamper TRXUS MT for radials.

Super swamper TSL or SX for Bias.

No ****tos, I would LOVE swampers but they wont last at all on the road. I drive 10-15 miles a day to work and back and mud somewhere in there every single day. Swampers wont last the summer and I wouldnt be able to take a long drive on them. The nittos look like they would lack lateral traction on trails.:nono:

The MTR K's, would I notice a difference in them at 32x11.5 compared to my 31x10.5 in terms of needing to regear?

Quite the opposite. They have good lateral traction. They grab hold and hang on. They walk all over a KM2 when it comes to lateral traction.

If they can keep a loaded Cummins from sliding sideways down a sidehill, they'll hold a little Cherokee in place.
