New Jeep Owner - Tires?

Howdy...i pick up my 02 Wrangler Sport this week. It needs some new rubber. From the research i have done, it seems the BF All Terrains are the good ones. When I look them up online, I always see the 30x9.5 listed as the tire size for the jeep. but i also see posts of guys putting on 31x10.5. are the 31's really much better thand the 30's
Thanks

The reason you see so many people running the 31x10.5 is that it is the largest tire you can run on a stock TJ. You might get some rubbing on the lower control arms at full turn which is easily fixed.

my 30's have never given me a problem. although i have gotten stuck before, my 30" bfg at's have carried me through the same spot as some xj's on 32's and 33's. i'm gonna try some Kumho Road VENTURE MT in 30" next because: i cant afford the lift just yet, my 30" have only ever let me down twice so far(in bumper level mud mind you), and because those kumho's are cheap and have good reviews on tirerack.com...many of said reviews by jeeps.

as far as going to 31's...up to you, but my 30's have done me just find for my 95% on road dd and just fine during that 5% off road trips.

30's are fine. 31x10.50x15's definitely look better, but if you're unlifted and discoed, you'll lose some articulation off-road. For moderate offroading, both 30's and 31's will work. There are a number of quality a/t tires available. BFG's are the most popular for street/light offroad use. The best quality a/t out there right now is the Bridgestone Dueler Revo. Top of the line, and utterly silent on the interstate.

I have 31" BFG A/Ts and they're great. They're better than 30"s because they give you a little more ground clearnance, and personally I think they just look better. I am thinking about going with 31" BFG M/Ts soon though, they have a more aggressive look and would probably do a little better on the trail.

To steal a picture (this is not my Jeep)...

You might also look at REVO's for either size (see the link below). I run them on both my Jeeps (at least until I can afford new wheels and tires for the TJ... as I plan to go to 32's).

I pick up my new (to me) 2002 wrangler tomorrow. Thanks for the tire info. I think I am gonna go with the BFG AT 31's. One more question....are the stocks rims ok, or is it worth the $$$ to upgrade the rims?
thanks

Your stock rims are likely much higher quality than any aftermarket rim you would buy. If you like them, keep them. I kept mine when upgrading my tires.

The stock rims are fine. Revos are a lot better tire than the BFG's, but if you can get BFG's a lot cheaper, go for it, they'll be fine.
