Looking for tire opinions
I did a little searching but couldn't find much information other than pretty biased views on a couple posts, but I was kind of looking for info from people who have had multiple sets of tires and could help me out with my issue, now for the time being I do 100% DD in my rig, but in the very very near future it's going to be seeing a lot more trail time, so I am looking for a tire that will be a good combo of both not so noisy and good street traction, as well as excellent offroad traction (if such a tire exists
I have found a couple in around the price range I am looking, the tires will be 31x10.5x15's and I have a 3" lift atm, closer to 4 in the back in a little bit after I put my new revolvers on when they get here. Here is what I have found so far if anybody has any opinions on any of them, let me know, would really like to hear from people who have owned more than one of these before: BFG AT KO's - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=All-Terrain+T%2FA+KO Not sure if I want something with that much of an AT but I haven't heard anything bad about these tires yet, so looking for opinions on how they do offroad compared to a more aggressive tire. BFG M/T KM's - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=Mud-Terrain+T%2FA+KM Anything that sets these aside from the other MT's? Yokohoma Geolander M/T - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=Geolandar+M% 2FT+Plus Like the aggressive tread, but how noisy are these on the street? Kuhmo Road Venture M/T 834 - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Road+Venture+MT +834 Kuhmo Road Venture M/T KL71- http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Road+Venture+MT +KL71 Any good opinions on these? The more I look at them the more I am liking the Kuhmo's though so I could use some input on these for sure. Firestone Destination M/T's - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Firestone&tireModel=Destination +M%2FT Top rated offroad tire by Tirerack on their comparison, so these are catching my eye for the ratings they have gotten. I know there are tons and tons more other tires that have more aggressive treads like the Trxus and Maxxis, I have MTR's on there right now and they are just noisy as hell on the highway so I want to move to something different when these wear out. Like I said I am still researching but I could use some good opinions! Thanks all.

Are your MT/R's wearing or worn funny? We've got MT/Rs on both our Jeeps and for 35's, they're relatively quiet, and ours are pretty worn down. When my previous BFG MT's were this worn, they howled like banshees on the road.
For what it sounds like you're going to be using your rig for, I dont' think you can go wrong with the BFG AT's. That's what my first set of non-stock tires was on my XJ, and we've got a set on our Megacab (it doesn't get wheeled though). The AT's worked fairly well offroad for anything you could do with 31's, other than in the mud.

Yeah if I go with an AT it will be with the KO's, I can get a pretty good price on them locally through sams, but I thought I would see what people thought about them offroad.
They clog up pretty bad in the mud?

For DD duty, stick with the BFG AT KO. But, if you want something more agressive than that, you could go to the BFG Mud Terrain tires. Since you live in Missouri, you'll most likely see some wet trail conditions and these tired would be an asset. Just be prepared for the added tire noise of the MT's on DD duty.
I'd steer clear of the Yoko Geo's, Firestone and Khumo's. I've tried the Geo's and they were LOUD. as for the Firestone and Khumo's, cheaper is definitely not better. The BFG's have triple reinforced sidewalls and that does make a difference. Have you ever tried changing a tire in the trail? Not as easy as doing it on pavement... You normall cut a tire when the rig is all wapperjawed in some strange contortionist position that just further complicates things. I live in the western US, so most of my trails are desert. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my BFG AT KO's. Their great on road and off. |

I have the BFG M/T's on my XJ, and it is DD 90% of the time. Been 6000k miles and they still got the little teeth on them and look new... besides the scratched up sidewalls from rocks and mud. They arent noisy can barely hear em even at highway speeds. So far im 100% happy with these. Also have a friend with BFG A/T's, after wheelin and pullin on the street to clear em, hes like wide open doin 35 or so till they clear. They suck, dont clear worth crap, but if you dont see alot of mud these are the way to go, they last seriously forever.

What about the goodyear silent armor vs the KO's? The SA's seem to rank pretty high on the On/Off road comparison, they ranked #2 where KO's are #9.

And these scored #1... but they don't look like they'd do very well for what most of us would consider as "off-road" driving/wheeling.

yeah I saw that, didn't say I liked the Silent Armors, just kind of trying to see what my options are out there, although I am still leaning hard towards the BFG's, especially since I can get a set of 5 of either delivered to my local Sams club for around $640.

I think the Silent Armors would be great for a street or dirt-road going vehicle, and if you didn't care about having an aggressive looking tire.
Honestly it sounds like you'd best be served by something like a BFG MT, more MT/Rs, or the new Toyo OpenCountry MTs, if you're willing to give up some road manners vs something like the BFG AT. edit: proper pressure and alignment, and frequent rotations, will go a long way to keeping MT-type tires as quiet as possible on the road and also maximize tread life.
