Looking at BFGs: Get muds or stick with ATs?

My 2004 Unlimited still has the stock GSAs, and it's time to upgrade.

I live high in the mountains on a steep, winding gravel road that's not plowed. Snow in winter is usually a few inches deep but can be up to 2-3 feet. During summer monsoons, the roads can get muddy, though seldom more than a few inches deep. Other than that, I'm on paved highways and streets.

Would BFG ATs be best, or might I benefit from MTs? I kind of like the MT look and don't mind spending more for them, but would ATs actually be a better tire for my conditions? I'm looking at the 31x10.5 for 15" rims.

Are muds best only for real mud wheeling? Or can they be good for more typical AT applications as well?

Thanks.

well lets see ats are def better in snow but thats the hard packed stuff, deep snow ive found that mud terrains do very well. BFG muds last a long time and yes look good, so i say spoil yourself a lil and get those, they are def a very street friendly tire

I'd go for the MTs and sipe them as jzmtl suggested. If you have a local Discount Tire, they'll do it for $10/tire.

Trxus MTs are nice tires, but BFG MTs are a better tire for mostly street use. Trxus MTs didn't wear so good with my experience.

Thanks, guys. I will definitely look into the sipes.

Do muds affect highway MPG more than ATs? Or are they about the same?

Same size, same psi the AT's will get better mpg than the MT's. Even though the MT's look better, I'd do the AT's. They'll get you better winter traction than the MT's will siped.

Thanks, hoseclamp. I was just wondering about this. I brought up this topic in the big TJ snow thread (which morphed into more of a tire discussion), and the advice there pionts me to the ATs. I think the ATs look almost as cool, and I'd rather have function over form anyway. Thanks for all the tips.

I just got myself a set of 33x10.50 BFG AT's. A major factor in that decision was the fact that they offer excellent performance in winter conditions:

I saw that pic in another thread. Love that black TJ! Wish I could do 33's, but I'm all stock, no lift. Maybe someday. But I think when I get the ATs I'll order them on black steelies. My Unlimited has Ravines like yours, but I really dig that all-black look. My LJ is khaki with a black hard top and black (limo tinted) windows, so the shiny Ravines kinda stand out a bit for my tastes. Thought about painting the Ravines too. Hmm, we'll see ...
