How bad is the gas mileage between ATs and MTs?

I have stock ATs now and I'm getting new rims and tires. I like the aggressive look of MTs but it would be overkill for what offroading I do. If I get MTs they would have to be siped for DD. I'm looking at Mickey Thompson MTZ. Everything I read has been positive about them. My AT tire would be BFG AT KO if I go that way. I just wondering if I'm making to big of a deal the gas mileage difference. ( I tend to over analyze things.)

Maybe 1mpg diff. Of course with my TJ getting 15 mpg that would be a 6.5%

I saw about 2-3 MPG difference when I switched from factory road tires to MT's on my Dodge truck.

Lost probably 3-4 MPG on my TJ when I switched, but I feel some of that was due to increasing tire size without changing gearing.

I noticed about a 3 mpg loss when switching from a BFG A/T to the MT MTZ same size tire.

yeah, the loss can be a pretty good amount. there's generally a lot of extra weight with the M/Ts. The MTZ is a nice tire though.

this is odd though. I've lost about 5 max mpg (rough numbers, no highway, don't really check often) with my 33s since the swap. I thought most of it was coming from the larger tire.
