Good Tires?

I am thinking about getting my dad new tires for his TJ for Xmas. The ones he currently has seem to get absolutely terrible traction on if the road is at all wet or snowy.
He does mostly on-road driving, but does some off-roading up-north.
The BFG All-terrain TAs seem to be the big favorite, but i am looking for soething less expensive. Any ideas?
Has anyone had used those kumho venture A/Ts or the Bridgestone Dueler H/Ts or anything else?
Also, I have heard some really bad things about every tire, even the BFG AT T/As.
Some people will say they are the greatest, then some people will say they are the worst, in the same conditions.
They cant be both, so is this just idiot drivers that think new tires allow them to drive extra fast or what?

Sorry for the stupid questions.
Thanks for the help.
Ken

considering you are up in snow/ice country, i would probably stay away from mud terrain tires like the kumhos. i have a set of trxus now and they seem to do better on ice than my last set of bfg m/t's but not as great as my long ago a/t's. have you checked costco for pricing? you know you can special order tires from them and they're prices are very low and no haggling is required.

I'm looking at M/Ts for when I get my jeep, but I think they are a little bit too noisy my dads daily driver. Or are they?
Anyone ever try the Dueler H/Ts?
Wilderness AT IIIs?
Kumho Road Venture AT? Or something similar to those?

Thanks,
Ken

Im running 31-10.5 Kumho Venture MT's. Great traction and wear with nearly 25000 miles on them so far.The only time Ive been stuck is when Ive bottomed out. Kinda touchy in ice, but what tire isnt? Great tire for the money. My next set will be the same. If you pop one, it doesnt cost an arm and a leg for a new one. Very durable. Only real downfall is that it has a soft sidewall (Its only 3 ply I think) but still takes abuse.
