That helps if he has the cover off. With the cover on you can rev it and dump the clutch - an open diff or a worn out limited-slip will leave one black streak on the pavement and a working limited slip will leave two. I would not do this unless it was my Jeep - some people might take particular offense at such action from a prospective buyer. Nor would I do this with larger than stock tires - you may break something.
I can't remember what my trac lock looked like. I would put a 3 ton jack under the rear end and spin the wheels. If they both spin in one direction you have teh LSD. If they spin in opposite directions you are open.
I think that is a trac lock from looking at it again...HTH
Like owen said get the rear wheels off the ground and spin one side by hand. If the other side goes the opposite direction it's open. If it spins the same way it's a limited slip.
