Heres a dumb question, how can you tell the difference between a limited slip and an open differential?

a limited slip diff (trac-lok) is shaped like a cylinder while the open diff is shaped more like a cone , hope that helps

That helps if he has the cover off. With the cover on you can rev it and dump the clutch - an open diff or a worn out limited-slip will leave one black streak on the pavement and a working limited slip will leave two. I would not do this unless it was my Jeep - some people might take particular offense at such action from a prospective buyer. Nor would I do this with larger than stock tires - you may break something.

I can't remember what my trac lock looked like. I would put a 3 ton jack under the rear end and spin the wheels. If they both spin in one direction you have teh LSD. If they spin in opposite directions you are open.

I think that is a trac lock from looking at it again...HTH
