Bias Ply vs Radial Tires
I'd like to have a thread that explores the benefits and drawbacks of bias ply vs radial tires.
I know a little about this subject, but not enough. So I'm not going to say anything more about this subject for now, but I will likely have some specific questions later. I request that others who know more about these subjects pick up the ball and run with it, and explain it to the rest of us. Thanks.

Bias ply is good for trail rig duty only....
I would not recommend Bias Ply for Daily Driver use though. They suck for milage and alot of them will tend to flat spot on cold days. Otherwise getting a thumping until the tire somwhat warms up & takes shape. The radial tire is what you would want if you drive alot on the streets or drive to the trails and drive back home. If you trailer your rig to & from the trails... then yea would get a BIAS tire. Just my .02 cents

I run 36 bias ply Iroks. My jeep is not a dd, but it only gets about 3-4k miles a year. I drive it to and from the trail (~45 min to an hour), it will drive smoothely on the hwy (65mph). I have never had a problem with the flat spots that many people talk about. They are harder to keep balanced though. All in all I am happy with them. I believe they are a little lighter than radials as well.

Bias are a lot lighter than radials, especially once you start getting into the larger tire sizes.
As for performance, i've heard all sides of the arguments but i've heard enough positive feedback on the bias ply to convince me to go with them as my next tire. Jeep will be a DD but doesn't see a lot of miles. It was the price (bias are cheaper) and reduced weight that sold me on them. |
