Bias ply VS radial
So i am looking for new/used online and there is a set of swamper ltb's that are bias ply. are these going to wear out very quickly if drivin on the highway?i drive up to school monday and drive home friday and thats basically all the highway driving i do. are these going to waste away if i run them 140 highway miles a week? im not worried about noise, its a jeep its supposed to be noisey. i have zero experience with non radial tires so that is why im asking.
Thanks in advance Will

Tire wear is more a function of the rubber compond that the build style. I am not familar with the LTB's to know if they are softer or not, but I would call the manufacture or a dealer that carries them and see if they can provide any life expectancy numbers.

they are very soft, and wear fast, they also flatspot badly, it takes about 10 miles for my LTB's to warm up enough so i can drive faster than 35mph..
but off road.... baby, there is no substitute http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v322/vector6/DSCN1324.jpg that being said... get radials. |

Non radial tires on the highway arent much fun. They get flat spots every evening and take a few miles of driving before they stop "bouncing". If I were driving on the streets much at all I'd stick with a radial.

Not totally true bias tires will wear quicker because of their "build style" they build up more heat than a radial and heat makes tires wear.

I have about 17k miles on my 33x10.50 Swamper TSL Radials, I JUST went out to my Jeep w/ a tread-depth gauge and got 18,17,17,16, and 15/32nds on my tires. The 18 was on the L/F(was just rotated there from L/R), and the 15 was on the spare, so it won't see the ground for another 3,000 miles.
I didn't measure them when new, but according to 4 Wheel Parts, they should be 21/32nds new. That means an average of 4.4 32nds of an inch wear since I had them new. Over 17k miles, that equates to about 3800 miles per 1/32nd of an inch. I will want to get rid of them around 12/32nds or so, as bald Swampers are useless and look awful. I expect 35,000 usable miles. And probably another 5,000 miles of being usable on-road but not working so well off the pavement. Now, keep in mind, this is with a five tire rotation, so if you only get 4 tires or only rotate 4 tires around, you'll get about 20% less mileage. FWIW I drive everywhere on these things and love them. They're good driving in the rain at speed(will not hydroplane at all), but coming to a stop can be a little scary if you aren't paying attention or the road is really slick. No worse than low GS-A tires IMO. They're relatively quiet on road for as aggressive as they are. The radio or wind noise w/ no top can easily drown them out. I'm sure this is due to the skinny size(10.50 wide), 12.50s are much louder. Oh and they're freaking great in mud and pretty decent in rocks. ![]() ![]()
