Air pressure-chalk test done-results

Guys it is so strange.
I did the chalk test yesterday and the result is that I have to run 22psi in my 32x11.5 BFG Mudders so that they wear even. The thing is that the ride is much better on the street too at 22psi. I started the test at 30psi going down and ending up to 22psi. I have the 4-cyl with no heavy aftermarket parts so I understand my rig is light. But isn't 22psi too low for street and highway driving?
Any comments are welcome

Thanks, Mike

That sounds a touch low, but not by a whole lot. If the ride is better and the tires wear better and the gas mileage isn't affected much, stick with it!

That does sound low, especially for that tire size... but it could be that you need to go that low because of the lighter weight of your rig. I'd be worried about the tires overheating & causing a blow out.

I run 26 psi in mine. I tend to take corners harder so it wears evenly. Otherwise if I followed the chalk test exactly the would wear more on the edges. I would go with 24-25 psi and see what happens.

I've run 3 different sets of tires on mine and the chalk test netted different pressures for each set.

I wound up running 26psi on all of them though.

I have a 4cyl also and I run about 20 psi in my 33" dunlop mud rovers on my daily driver. So 22 psi does not sound off to me.

The 4 cylinder engine is a lighter engine, therefore the cause of less psi. As long as you are making a full print on the ground, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have 32x11.5 bfg mt's, and I had been running at 25 psi, but the edge lugs were wearing a little more then the middle lugs, so I upped it to about 26.5 psi, where I am at now. I have the 4 angry squirrels also, but I do have some extra skids, bumpers, and a whole lotta tools and a sub box adding some extra weight.

I'd be curious to see how the math works out on yours...

and I bet it's fairly close to 22PSI...

If I can find the BFG info online, I'll post back up...

(...and I'll move this to Tires/Wheels)...

the 32x11.50x15 BFG M/T KM is listed as Max pressure of 2535@50PSI...

2535x4 = 10140

GVWR for an SE (according to Jeep.com) is 4450 lbs for your TJ...

4450/10140 = .438856

50 * .438856 = ~21.9

sounds like 22PSI is right on target for optimum tire wear...

Greg

funny thing is...the math for mine works out to around 14PSI...and I just can't bring myself to run them that low...so I run about 18PSI on the street...and about 3PSI on the trails...
