35" BFG tires on 15"X10" or 15"X12" wheels?
I bought an 83 CJ-8 a few months back and am looking at replacing both the wheels and tires. After all the research, I am pretty much set on BFG All-Terrain KO tires – 35" / 12.5. I am also happy with getting the Mickey Thompson Classic II wheels.
My dilema is whether to put the 35" tires on 15"X10" or 15"X12" wheels. BFG specs and reps do not recommend them on 12" (as I would expect from the manufacture), but others I have spoken with have said they look better and would recommend putting the 35's on 12" wheels. I am not planning on doing any serious off-roading, only highways, a few fields and gravel roads. Overall, I want them to look good and ride good. But I also do not want a safety hazard. The place I am getting them will do either option with warranty. Any opinions, feedback and/or photos of either option would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i always ran 31-10.50-15's on a 15x10,and never had a problem.the only drawback i could seee is if you lowered the tire pressure for rocks and such.i would go with the 15x12,but i cant tell you you would never run into a problem.its one of those times to take a chance if thats the rim you want, can always sell um and buy 15x10's if they dont work well.

Your kiddin right 35" tires to ride around on the highway and maybe a gravel road, sell that to someone that deserves it... J/K
I was asking about 8" or 10" for 33 12.50 and have decided with the help of 95% of replies to just go with the 8". I don't think many are going to see any reason to go with 12". if the company does not suggest it then it's probably safety related. |

A 12.50 on a 12" rim will look silly IMO. I'd say get a 8" or the 10" at the most. The 8" puts more pressure on the bead when you air down so you less likely to blow a bead. Anyway I think the 12" would be just too wide and will make your tires look like they have a bulge all the time.

15x12 is too wide for any reasonably sized tire we're likely to run on a Jeep. And for trail use, a 15x8 works better than a 15x10 wheel does for a 33x12.50 and 35x12.50.
If anyone is thinking the wheel width should match the tire's advertised width, that is wrong. In other words, a 15x12 wheel is way too wide to even consider for a 33x12.50 or 35x12.50 tire. The tire's width dimension is not its bead width nor is it the tread width. A 33x12.50 tire's beads are probably around 8-9" wide, and its tread width is probably pretty close to only 10". That 12.5" dimension is only its widest width half-way up between the sidewalls. Most of us run 15x8 wheels for 33x12.50 and 35x12.50 because that width wheel holds onto the tire better when the tires are aired down for offroading. The wider the wheel, the harder it is for the tire to remain securely seated when the tire is aired down. Think of a balloon placed between two walls spaced 8" apart and two more walls 10" apart... the balloon between the 8" walls requires less air pressure to remain seated between them than it would if the walls were 10" apart. ![]()

you really didnt read what i put then,i said the only draw back is when you air them down problems will happen like blowing off the bead.the reason i dont like 15x8 is looks like crap with a big, wide tire.i like 15x10's, some do some dont,it wouldent matter to me if they affected performance,i would still run them.but the more thought i put ito the 15x12,i dont think i would go that way, somtimes wider is better, but then theres too wide |

No, I read what you had written. I just had a hard time deciphering your poor grammar. Oops.

you can run the 12's but it wouldn't be all that safe to wheel it or air down. i like the looks of the 10'' on that wheel & tire combo. i had a 97' tahoe with a 6'' lift & them same wheels & tires . ( 35x12.50 bfg a/t---- 10x15 classic II's )
