There were a number of reasons why the 4.0L had to be retired. Volume was one consideration - obviously we need to build a certain number of them to justify the expense. Secondly, inline 6 cylinder engines are much more difficult to package in the vehicle and still obtain acceptable crash test results. The 4.0L is both long and tall - a packaging nightmare in a modern vehicles.

Seems like an interesting approach, but why not just call it a 6spd, distribute the ratios a little more evenly and have it select 2nd or 3rd based on need (vs 2nd or alternate 2nd)?
If you use the Electronic Range Select (ERS) it will toggle through all 6 gears. If you leave it in Drive it will not go through all gears - it will depend on temperature, speed, and load. Since some of the transmission internals are carryover it would have been more difficult to change all of the gears.

Ah - now I see! When you are in Tow/Haul, MDS is deactivated. What you are hearing when not in Tow/Haul is the exhaust sound caused by 4 cylinder mode. We did our best to make it as transparent as possible while still maintaining that signature V-8 sound (when in 8-cyl mode) and needless to say that's quite a challenge.

I may have one simple question: since XK and WK are on the same platform, and XK diesel is already available in europe, why didn't you offer it on US market? I guess it was done to check how will WK diesel sales look like, but I'm not sure.

Don't think, that I encourage you to do it, diesels suck But I'm just curious.

Ps. Will we ever have WJ related thread?

You get it to the moon and we will 'wheel it there with you!

We have advanced groups working on vehicles 2+ years before they become a program - the bulk of the engineering is done in the last 2 years before it is launched to the public. The inspiration comes from past vehicles, concept vehicles, current trends, and market demands among others.

Makes perfect sense - that's one reason we do these sessions. It depends on which group of engineers you ask, but one specific item most of us are impressed with is the QuadraDrive II four wheel drive system. (And it's fun testing it too!)
