Which zj's came with 3.73 rears?

I need to replace my rear in my 98 limited that has the d35 with 3.73 gears. Which other zjs came with 3.73 gears from the factory?

I think all v8 ZJ's had 3.73s. 93-95 will have a d35, 96-98 had the 44a. Also 4.0s with the tow/tow-prep package had 3.73s.

I have a 96 ZJ Laredo 4.0L with the towing package. According to my build sheet it's equipped with 3.73 gears and Dana 35C.

try getting the axle out of a 96+ v8 zj...get that d44a with 3.73..nice simple upgrade...

if you can weld, find you an 8.8 with 3.73 and call it a day.

I think the 96-98 V8s had the D44a with 3.73s. 96-98 I6 had a D35? Not 100% sure about the I6s.

The D35 is shorter than the 44a so you would need to adjust your drive shaft unless you have a 249 TC and you might be able to just get a DS from the doner vehicle with the 44a.

if your 98 zj has the 5.9L motor it came with a dana 44a and 3:73 gears. if your thinking of find some gears out of a junk yard, your better off just getting new ones. a new ring and pinion will set you back any where between 150.00-250.00. the dana44a is different the a regular dana 44 the bearing's are not interchangeable, i don't know if the ring and pinion are the same. which ever way you go make sure it's for the 44a. if your rear end is making noises and that,s the reason for putting new gears in, unless there are teeth missing or ground down on the ring and pinion, then i new bearing set should cure the problem and cheaper. your zj also has a trac-lock in it which could be your noise problem. one other bit of advice unless you know how to set up a rear (or front) end properly let a pro do it. you need a dial caliper to set the backlash correctly. if you are wanting to swap the whole rear end to a regular dana44 hen i think but am not 100% sure a dana 44 rear end out a wrangler tj has the same track width or maybe a cherokee xj. you might have move the coil pads to match your zj .if you want PM me and i can tell you what i have done with my 98zj,there are several options for that type of rear end. but because it has a aluminum center section you are limited.

All V8's from 96+ have the D44a and 3:73 gears. The 5.9 have a thicker rear drive shaft though. Did all v8'scome with a track lock after 96? I know every option was on the 5.9 standard.

Not all V8s after 96 had the trashlock.

They did all have the 3.73s.

BTW, if they had 3.73s in the rear diff, they had them in the front diff as well....unless you had a 2wd which didn't have a front diff.......or a YJ front bumper.
