ZJ or XJ

Ok I'm at a bit of a crossroads and looking for some opinions and reasons behind them. I currently have a '97 ZJ 5.2 Limited in pretty decent shape. It has the usual ZJ issues like a dead VIC and bad VC in the 249. While out and about today I saw a '00 XJ Sport. 4wd with cloth. Miles are virtually the same between the two. I'd lose a few perks that come along with the ZJ Limited but I'd gain a few mpg and still have a familiar drivetrain with the XJ. I love my V8 but I'm thinking a 4.0 XJ shouldn't be much different as far as stock performance goes. Parts may be a little more plentiful with the XJ as well as having more aftermarket support for suspension upgrades. The XJ's body is arrow straight with a little surface rust on the roof above the passenger door, but nothing too serious. Assuming you could have either one, which would you choose and why, and yes I know this is the ZJ forum.

You already own the zj. If you put the money youd spend on the XJ into the ZJ itd be ready to rock. a bad VIC aint nothin to fix. A bad VC in the Tcase is a fairly easy fix as well depending on your mech skills. The ZJ has a bigger/ heavier transmission. You know what your ZJ has been through, the XJ is a big maybe. It may be in great shape or, it may have issues that need to be addressed too.

Id rock the ZJ personally.

Xj's do have more aftermarket support but ZJ's are becoming more popular and more options are available, it seems, almost daily. The suspension in the front of an XJ is virtually identical to a ZJ. I prefer Coils to leafs personally however, a properly set up leaf spring suspension will go just as far.

What are your intentions? Wheelin rig? DD? Or.?

Plus EVERYONE has a lifted XJ.. Zj's are a bit more rare and again, IMHO just as capable.

Whichever I go with will be a DD and be on pavement 95% of its life. I like that the XJ has the 2wd option and as much as I love my 5.2 it wouldn't hurt to have a few more mpg. I do agree that while I know my ZJ pretty well, the XJ could be a ticking time bomb who knows.

Only downside is that you will lose room and comfort. Otherwise I like XJ's.

You can swap a 242 into the ZJ if you need 2wd, won't get you any more mpg though.

zj97ltd 07-14-2013 07:19 PM

No I know 2wd isn't going to increase mpg but I was thinking the xj wouldn't be too much of a dog with the 4.0. I realize it won't keep up with a healthy 5.2 but I don't think it would be too drastic of a change.

I've got a XJ And a ZJ. Simply put, the XJ is the Spare vehicle. The ZJ is a MUCH nicer ride and just as capable. With the largest(that I've seen) lift available of 7" for the ZJ, as compared to 9" for the XJ, I'm not worried for that extra 2". Both of mine are 4.0l engines. AW4 on the XJ and 42RE on the ZJ as well.

ZJs have the creature comforts. XJ is a peppy little go-cart that seems a lot lighter than the ZJ. I think the XJ is far more fun to drive.

jt_armstrong 07-15-2013 03:55 AM

I have both a ZJ and XJ. My deep down preference is the XJ. Yeah the ZJ has more creature comforts but the XJ suits my style a little better.

I seem to be getting a lot of similar responses. I think it's going to come down to what matters more, creature comforts or the boxier XJ styling.

Well my water pump bypass hose went out on the way to work today. I guess that's what I get for looking elsewhere lol.

dnuccio 07-15-2013 08:58 AM

i swear, these ZJs just KNOW

zj97ltd 07-15-2013 09:09 AM

She got jealous.
