ZJ Won't Stay Running....

Hey guys, I've got a pretty big mystery that needs to be solved on my ZJ. After driving it today for ~400 miles back to school it doesn't want to stay running. When I go to start it, she putters a bunch and won't actually start or stay running unless my foot is on the gas. If I let it sit for a bit and then try again it starts normally and runs fine. Shut it off and then try to start again and it wont run. Its odd because for the entire trip it ran just fine. Throws no codes at all.

As in my sig, its a 97 4.0, 143,920 miles on her.

Any suggestions?

TIA

-Dave

Within the last week, someone else reported the same problem. I do not remember the outcome.

Start drilling down

Maybe you need to clean your Idle air control motor?

Could be your battery/corroded battery cables? We need more details. Does starter kick in when you crank her up? etc

Starter sounds fine, just keeps cranking until I hit the gas and it then runs rough. The battery cables are tight and not corroded but I think the battery is nearing the end of its life.

What would you recommend for cleaning the idle air controller?

when the TPS went bad on my XJ (4.0) it wouldn't start unless I actually put the pedal to the floor. THen if i let off it would ujst sputter out and die.

To clean the IAC just take off the TB and take some carb cleaner to the TB and the IAC housing. I rear somewhere to not take the IAC housing off the TB since there is a gasket that is hard to find at autostores.

Not sure if this is valid information since I only cleaned the IAC and TB on a 91 XJ and I am not sure if the TB and IAC are the same on a more "Refined" ZJ.

Other information to throw out would be to check the fuel filter but I see you have a 97 and from what I have heard these are in the tank and its a PITA to get too, not an easy job.

The only way to propery clean the IAC is to remove it. It has an O-ring seal. Go to the link provided and scroll down to post# 22. I wrote something on how to clean this.http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showt...=150055&page=2

Throw a TPS on it for the heck of it and see if it runs. If it doesnt.. return it.

I know you cant return electronic parts if they've been used, but ive never been questioned.

I'm also alot bigger then the parts counter guy

GreenDean, do you shop at Barnes & Noble by any chance?
I got a few books there the other day and one of them had coffee stains all over it

sometimes the TPS can be on its way out and not throw a code, thats what happened to my XJ. It wasn't shifting until like 4600 rpms and then finally it threw a code.

After I moved back into school in September, my Jeep was doing the exact same thing. I had to have it towed...they told me at the mechanic that they replaced the battery and the cables, plus did a full throttle body cleaning, and it's been working perfect ever since

Good Luck

I went ahead and cleaned the IAC and throttle body the best I could with the tools I have here at school and got a good amount of garbage out but it still seems to stall sometimes.

An interesting thing when I went to start it though was the the comp and radio had lost their time. The other thing I noticed what that it would idle rough right after starting and then become smooth as the battery gauge reached 14. All signs seem to point to battery. The stange thing though is if I hit the throttle and then immediately back off it returnes to idle just fine but if I stay on it for maybe 10-20 seconds and then let off it stalls. Any thoughts on that aspect being related to the battery?

Could be the battery, could also be alternator related.
If you have time, you can pull the alt off and have any autoparts place check it for you. If its not that, then replace the battery.

But before you do any of that, check all of the main heavy gauge wires and make sure nothing is loose, cracked or corroded.
