Zj Tranny 5.9l V8

Hello,

Is there another tranny that is compatible to a 98 grand jeep cherokee 5.9L v8 4x4? Or does anyone know where I can find one at a reasonable rate or it's parting out?
Thanks

Unfortunately no, the 98 5.9's used a 46RE trans, and they're the only ZJ's that used it. Have you looked into pulling it yourself and having it rebuilt?

Don't Dodge Rams have the 46RE? or is it just a little different?

The starter is on the wrong side.

The only tranny you should use is the 46re from a 1998 jeep grand cherokee 5.9ltd. You can't use one from a dodge without a whole mess of other modifications.

You can use a 44re, but I would suggest a high performance/heavy duty rebuild on it before using it. Better off getting yours rebuilt really.

I'm on my third 46RE in just 130k miles which I think is a lot for my pavement princess - 46RE SUCK! I'm going to take it into a tranny shop here in town since mine is popping out of overdrive and it's like having an exhaust brake on - it slows incredibly fast from highway speeds by just letting the foot off the gas.

my buddy has a ram with a 46re that pulls a trailer every day and its over 280k miles now on the original transmission,

how often did you flush the transmissions, it NEEDS it every 30k miles

Sounds like you have sensor problems. Not physical transmission problems.

Or cooler flow issues, did you flush and flow check the trans cooler when you swapped the transmissions?

My 46re was replaced in Germany ($3500!) by a dealership at 100k, maybe three years of burning up the autobahn didn't meet the intent of the engineers? It then promptly died while pulling our boat to Texas less than 2k miles later. Dealer replaced under 12 mo warranty and said torque converter was improperly installed?? Anyway - it's about to go to a tranny shop to see what it's current issue is. Trans fluid/flush is something I always take to the dealer for every 30k miles since I'm incredibly gun-shy around the damn tranny...
