Zj Stalls!!!

HEY there guys, my zj has a weird problem that i cannot figure out.

when i pull up to a stop light, and jam on the brakes a little harder then normal, the vehicle just stalls!!!!!!!!!!!

or sometimes, when from a complete stop, i try to give it some gas and it sputters and jerks crazily and then usually it drives normal.., this only happens occasionaly as well

well, any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Might your fuel pump be going bad? If all of the gas moves to the front of the tank on a hard stop, then a weak pump might have a hard time keeping up.

You can replace the filter, but it is not easy. You have to drop the tank. I would have the pressure at the fuel rail checked first. Also, when my fuel pump died, it was also throwing a CEL. If you are not gettting any CEL, then it may not be your pump. I do know that mine took a while before it threw a code.

I doubt it is your fuel pump itself or the filter. These would generally cause issues when under load (high fuel demand). I would check your TPS.

I agree. But it can be A LOT of things.

Here's what you should be looking for:

Battery & Battery terminals
Crankshaft Position Sensor
Throttle Position Sensor
Fuel Filter
Fuel Pump

Start off by checking your fuel pressure, if the fuel pressuer is O.K. i'd move on the the sensors and battery.

My 93 gave me some greif today. Pulled off the highway and stopped at a store, came out and it would fire up and die. Kept the rpm's up for a little while and it seemed to clear up, thought maybe just a bit of vapor lock. Continued on our merry way and about a 1 1/2 hrs later got to our destination. Same crap again, had to keep the idle up to about 1500 to get it to stay running, volt gauge would take a dive every time I let off the throttle and it would die, almost didn't start again but I got it going and made my way to a parts store. Popped a new alternator in and ran it for a few minutes to bring the battery back up to full charge and it never missed a beat the rest of the day.
Sure glad I didn't take all the tools out of the back when I spring cleaned it the other day. Now I just need to do something about that crappy 249.

That was very intuitive... Computerized vehicles will not run with less than 10 volts so bad alt can keep you from idleing..

But I would go with What Ross said..

Check Codes.. If not codes..
Check battery cables and connections .. No swollen cables or crusty connections ...

Check fuel pressure .. If thats good move on to TPS (throttle position sensor) then IAC (Idle air control)

You can check TPS with a volt meter and IAC will need to be taken off and cleaned with a good throttle body cleaner ..Not carb cleaner..) Both parts are around $30 if you have to replace them...

If neither of those clear up your problem.. Then it could be a bad Air charge temp sensor ... It causes simular problems...

But since I dont know what year or engine type you have I cannot go any farther...

That kind of thing is helpfull ...

I would think it's not a fuel issue. Sensors and electrical are my guess. If it only happens when you brake HARD, I could see it being a TPS or possibly vacuum issue.

My .02c.

Two years ago my ZJ did the same exact thing and progressivly got worse. Finally got real bad on a family vacation in Colorado. Replaced the fuel pump and cured the problem.

Not saying this is the same problem you are having, but certainly worth a look. The fuel pump is in the tank but still very easy to replace. Did it in an hour at a friends house with limited tools.

Good luck!
