ZJ roof rack pics/designs

I want to build a roof rack for my heep. Mostly to get the spare upgraded to full size and out of the back, but ill also use it for haulin stuff.

Can i get some pics of your custom roof rack and/or tire mount(on the rack or somewhere else)? Along with some tips and things you learned or would now do differently.

i know there's probably a thread like this, but i can't ever find what im looking for with the google search...http://www.jeepforum.com/ubb/confused.gif

Thanks!

I took 2 extra roof rack bars off a scrapped ZJ, put em on, used the front for a light bar, the 2 rear to mount my spare tire and the rear for my back up lights...cost me nothing but time...

I'm thinking of building a box to go in between my lights and the tire...just to keep stuff in on trips...I'll make it so its easily removable if I want...but I could use the extra space, especially in the summer, my G/F and I go camping and we use the back for a bed, always moving stuff from the back to the front

Here's mine.

I wouldn't recommend putting the spare tire on the roof. A rear tire carrier would be a much better approach.

Why you shouldn't:
More difficult to get to if you need to use it.
Lowers mpg by a few miles.
Creates an even more top heavy center of gravity.

how do you sleep in the back with your girl? I can't comfortably sleep in the back of my ZJ (rear seats removed and layed flat) don't ask how i know this, but someone forgot to bring the tent, the slept under, i slept inside. Two people? are you both little people?

I used a roof rack (basket type) from Cabela's that is made by Valley. It comes with an extender that fits in the center and seems quite solid. Itis mounted on a 2000 XJ using four of the factory crossbars. If interested I'll try to send or post a picture.

Well I guess if you're running those little tires it wouldn't effect much. But if you have real man tires (33"+) then it would be bad.

Its not hard to get to..I open the pass door, step up, unlock the lock, throw it down, never had a problem...
I drive a 5.2 gas guzzler...a few miles of worse gas mileage more than compensates for the room in the back
I'm never really in a position as to where that tire screws up my balance, so, its ok for me...never had a problem...

And ya Paddingtonbear, She aint very big...like 5'5 110lbs? And I'm 5'8 140, so..no problem sleeping...I can stretch my feet out easy and not hit my head
