ZJ roof rack

Hey guys, I used to own a 96ZJ 318, but got in a wreck and got a YJ. So now I am looking to load my pontoon boat frame on my YJ. But I don't have a roof rack. I used to have my spare on my ZJs roof and I remember that the rack was fairly simple. And I believe I could use one on my YJ with some mods. Does anyone know how it is attached to the roof? Torx, are the nuts welded to the roof? Any help so I can go to the JY only once. Thanks!

Zj roof racks are held on by 6 torx screws on each rail. There are nutserts in the roof.

ZJ racks have a slight curve to them to account for the roof line. To correctly and safely use a rack with the YJ you'll need the correct mounting system that distributes the load off the roof.

Flat roof rack on my ZJ, accounted for the curve using different sized hard rubber spacers. Bought longer bolts from the hardware store of the same thread size. Voila.

Ok so I found a rack off a 98 Cherokee. I took it to work today and I cut off a total of 17 inches on the rails (8 1/2" off each end) and a total of 7 inches off the cross members. I did not take an even amount off of each end of these as after measuring and tracing onto a table, I found that the cross members were bent evenly, so no need to keep everything centred. I will post some pictures tomorrow as I left them at work to paint. Thanks for all the suggestions!

No not yet, gotta paint still. I am not using self tapping on fibreglass, it will vibrate loose over time. I am using grade 5 bolts and exterior silicone. I will post pics when it's all done.

So I am not going to bolt it on yet, doing that Friday. But here it is kinda in place. The curve of the XJ rack is almost perfect for the YJ roof. Here are some pics.

Looks good man! So you went with an xj rack instead? Makes sense, less curve.

Well I didn't even think of that when I went to the JY to get one. It was the first jeep I saw. But after I pulled it off and found a ZJ and compared them, it was a good choice. Ill have it all done up tomorrow and ill post some pics of the finished product.
