hey guys whats up? im new to this site and so far i like it alot. i have a 96 zj that is basically bone stock except for a home made cold air intake and some mud terrain recaps. id like to make a pretty decent trail rig out of it while stil being a good road vehicle. the problem is im 18 with an 8.50/hr job. i want a 4 inch lift and a locker in the back. will i need to lower the tcase with a 4 inch lift or will it be ok? if u guys can give some good ideas and pictures on your projects that would be great. thanks guys
i just did but im not to sure what tcase, tranny i got. im pretty sure i have a dana 30 front and a 44 rear but if u know how to find out for sure can u tell me and i will fix it when i get off work tonite
"The front coil springs in a V8 ZJ Grand Cherokee are a bit longer and a bit more stiff than those in the I6 4.0L equipped ZJ Grand Cherokee. The springs from the I6 will not give you the lift you are looking for."
He has an I6 though, so if he has to hunt down those springs might as well buy all new?
this is an excellent kit, and cheap. you can keep your stock control arms if you need to, otherwise i'd get the premiuim kit that comes with all new arms (non adjustables, unless you have the money).
i have the premium kit and didn't have to drop my tc, so you should be fine on that. you'd want to go with 32s most likely, 33s are a bit more expensive and you'll have to trim to fit them
thanks guys. the premium kit is alot more so ill prob go with te other one. now if im not mistakin, when u lift a vehicle using stock control arms, that would bring the 2 axles closer to each other right? what kind of harm could this cause?
it shouldn't cause much harm, if any...the reason people upgrade to the thick steel control arms compared to the stock ones are that the stock ones are flimsy. since you're only going about 4 inches and have a long wheelbase, the angles won't be too steep, so there shouldn't be any problems if you install correctly.
thanks man, as soon as my income taxes come in ill prob start ordering parts. ive been waiting on them for the last month. how long did it take u to put ur lift on? few hours?
The lift kits at 4 to 4.5 inches use longer and better control arms than stock. The angles can be very excessive and the stock control arms weren't designed for that. 33s will kill that 4.0 motor unless he regears.
With the shorter control arms bringing the axles towards the center of the body, you run the risk of having excessive tire rub on the rear of the front fenderwell and the front of the rear fender well. And, if you've ever lifted a 4x4, nothing says I'm too cheap to do it right or get the correct size tires like hearing a mall crawler with tire rub.
my original plan was to run about a 32 on it. i still wanna be able to flex a good bit but i dont wanna go so small that it makes the jeep look goofy. i just want to make a good decent trail rig for as cheap as possible. im also looking to buy some sort of car for this summer so im not to worried about the mpg. im already gettin 14.8 according to the console info center
For a 32, I would highly recommend 4.5" or so on a ZJ. I experienced 32s on 3.5" and really was not happy. It's do-able, but not too much fun. I've got a few scars on my tires from the experience. As soon as I went 4.5-ish, everything was much better.
nevermind on the whole zj project guys. i kinda blew it up the other day. yea i put 2 rods through the block. its for sale if anybody is interested. im in southern pa so if u have no way to get it home dont bother lol. if ur real interested call me @ 7243210621
btw its a 96. body is excellent. small patch of rust in the corner of the lift gate, and a big dent in the passenger side rear door but if that bothers u i can get an exact match for 50 bucks. interior is also excellent and its full leather. real nice jeep. its all stock. just put a brand new radiator in it on 3/8/08 and it blew up on 3/11/08.
